Default jzx90 chaser radiators *EPC people*

    Hi,
well I have already patched up a little hole in the end tank on my jzx90 chaser radiator and now it looks like it has developed other leaks. I was going to get the end tank replaced but the radiator place said they can't do it as it will most likely crack and they can't get end tanks for them?

So has anyone with a jzx90 chaser had their radiator rodded out and end tanks replaced? As I want to know if this dude is bullshitting.

Also, anyone with an EPC, can you check the part number and see if any other cars (maybe cressida) would use the same radiator.

BTW the car has had such a hard run too. NOT! Sitting in the garage since September. Started every so often and I was in the middle of trying to fix my oil leak. Pisses me off when shit breaks without any use.

    Thanks

    Chris

With plastic top and bottom tanks, there is a chance that they will crack the core seal when they remove it.

When this happens they can't just weld it back together like they could if you had metal top and bottom tanks.

So he is not bullshitting you there.

Just get a custom 3 core ali one, you know you are going to need it in the end.

Otherwise, sometimes you can get someone to make up aluminium tanks and weld them to your existing core, if it's in good order. Plastic tanks always have a limited life...

I would think that the JZA70 radiator would be close to fitting. They share the same hydro fan i think.

Anyone got an EPC that could check if the jzx90 is the same as jza70?

So the main advantage of an alloy one is that the end tanks won't crack in the long run. If it is the same dimensions do they cool any better than a regular one? I haven't really had cooling issues so far except now that I have a leak obviously.

Haven't got much room between radiator and harmonic balancer pulley so no thicker one could fit in there.

No, from memory the JZA70 is a bit shorter than the JZX90.
Recently at the workshop there was a LX90 which came in with a bung rad, was just able to get the rad re-cored. However, one of the tanks looked brankspankers when they gave it back, so im not sure if they just cleaned and painted it or whether they sourced a new one.

You wouldn't have the contact details for the rad place that did it would you?

That would be great if you could get it. If they have info. Then I can pass that info. Onto a radiator place up here. Thanks

I had a mate make me up an aluminium top for my wifes celica after the plastic one cracked, its been on there for 3 years, not a problem, cost me a carton of jim beam and cola cans, $25 for a radiator cap and spout from another random radiator and $50 to pressure test the radiator. I can take a pic of it later today if you wanna see.

Well that would be a great solution except there is a small leak which had been fixed in the actual core. It started leaking again. There is also a patch on the end tank now so that would fix that. Sounds like an option though if I can get the core leak fixed. Otherwise, a guy on here has a jzx90 rad so hopefully they didn’t change during year models.

    Chris,

Got any stray current in your car? Sounds like the radiators rotting from the inside out.

Sorry, what do you mean by stray current? Are you talking about battery power?

The little hole in the radiator I think was caused by me with the spanner on the harmonic balancer accidentally. We have flushed it before also and pressurised it after we fixed the little hole and it was ok. Has come back now.

    Stolen from another site:

Stray currents in the cooling system
In simple terms stray current is a chemical/electrical process which causes an electrical current to pass through a vehicles cooling system fluid. It can cause rapid damage to radiators and will indirectly cause problems with other engine components such as water pumps, thermostat housings, etc.

This is brought about when one or more items such as a cooling fan or headlamp develops a problem in its electrical circuitry. This causes an electrical current to seek out an earth path via the radiator core through the engine coolant.

If the hole in the radiator was caused physically, then it's probably nothing to do with stray current.
