Default MX83 engine and gearbox removal

My engine and gearbox is almost out.

Just a quick question. Is the gearbox end of the drive shaft just a slip on spline style fitting or are there any hidden retainers??

The manual says withdraw it. To me this says it just pulls out, is that correct.

    Thanks Andrew.

Yes it simply just pulls out (fluid might then come out if it hasn't been drained!)

The user manual prob suggests disassembling the driveshaft (mark it first), then removing the center bearing supports and then removing the front half of the driveshaft

    Cheers

    Thanks Wilbo.

Can I simply hoist up the engine and pull tforward enough for the drive shaft to pop out??

    Andrew.

Normally you need a bit of a tilt on the engine if you're lifting it out with the transmission attached, so I'm not sure if that will work with the tailshaft still in? Worth a try I guess.

Why not simply undo the tailshaft center bearing bolts, mark and seperate the tailshaft and then be done with it!? It is a few mins work...

As Norbie said, you can try lol...

Yes, the tailshaft will fall straight out. With the radiator removed the engine will move far enough forward for the slip yoke to come out. Remember to drain the tranny first, been there done that.

You'll need a good steep angle on the engine to get it out, it's a tight fit. Easier out than in. I use one those leveling beams that goes onto my hoist, works a treat.

Just be careful of the sound deadening material that's on the firewall and tranny tunnel when sliding the engine and tranny out. The top of the tranny can grab this material and tear it.

    Thank you gentlemen.

I dropped off the centre bearing and out she popped.

Engine and gearbox are now sitting on my garage floor.

So now here are my options.

    1. Fix rod knock and put it back in.
    2. By an import engine and take a chance.
    3. By front cut 2jz gte Aristo $3100 delivered or 1uz crown $2300 delivered and catch the bus to work for a while.

    Hmmm.

    4. Find a JZX81 Front cut and enjoy the car after a weekend's work.

    Good luck.

    Haven't you got a 1uz in yours??

And you still recommend the 1jz.

Mainly because of the task involved in installing the V8. Don't get me wrong the 1UZ is a ripper donk, very relaible, quite powerful now, and sounds great at 6000+rpm.
My 1UZ cost $2500 or so but this was less than half on my total cost doing everything myself. Very time consuming as well. If you're looking to just replace your 7M because it's knackered, then I'd not suggest this conversion. If you're looking for a challenge, by all means go for it. I actually bought my 1UZ before deciding what car to buy to put it in. Now all I have to do is find a 1GZ-FE for my next challenge.
