Yes, the higher compression and VVTi is certainly apparent in the torque comparisons there!
I came across a journal article about the introduction of VVT to the 1JZ-GTE.
I figured that there would be a few here that would appreciate it, so I put it up.

Keep in mind, at that time everything produced in Japan had a claimed maximum HP of 280.

Sure feels it on the road too - twin turbo 1JZ's feel so much more sluggish and old-school in comparison.
talk about bashing the non VVTi 1J.
good article, very informative, extremely biased too, but i suppose its more from the "regular" consumers point of view, from a modification point of view, im sure this only holds true for minor performance mods.
