    Default Toyota FWD driveshafts differences (inculding MR2s)

    I've got a possibile issue with my front driveshafts & I'm looking at the possibilty of replacement.
    My current driveshafts are only one piece between the box & front hubs.
    ie I've got one really long one & one short one.

    I've seen on some SW20 MR2s that the long driveshaft is actually in 2 pieces & the driveshafts are the same length with the inner CV on the long shaft supported off a bracket on the engine block.
    Which other cars was this arrangement available on as it is supposed to reduce the torque steer effect?
    I also need to figure out whether my engine block has the provision for this also.

    only the SW20 turbo has the 2 piece shaft.

    20v Corolla motors have the split shaft. You need to check whether the three bosses on the back of the block where the centre bracket mounts have threads. 10kw Corolla blocks have the bosses but no thread for bolts.

    V6 camry is 2 piece as well same as mr2, usually easy to find

    I thought that was the case, but what length are they? The Camry is wider than my car.
    Any idea what inner CV joints they run, ie how many ball bearings?
    I've seen 2 types now. The 3 ball type in my car, & a six ball type in a GT4.

    Are the SW20 MR2 turbo & non-turbo shafts the same? I've heard the turbo ones have a bigger spline at the wheel end.

    I don't know if the non turbo and turbo MR2 shafts are the same but i can say for sure that the V6 camry shafts have 6 balls in them, i remember trying to get them all back in rather well for some reason.
    The GT4 outer CV bolts straight to the V6 camry and MR2 turbo inners, I know this for certain and with this combination they fit perfectly into a 1.8 litre corrolla running a 3SGTE and LSD mr2 box (how is that for luck). The GT4 outer splines are the same as corrolla and 4 cly camry splines.
    The V6 camry and MR2 (at least the turbo) wheel end splines are bigger than the 4 cyl camry and GT4

    GZE shafts also are mounted off the block. Not sure on the CV style though.

    that would probably be the e-58 gearbox type drive shafts if i remember correctly.

    aw11 shafts are one piece unequal length. ae92 GTZ (SC) run equal length length shafts supported off the block

    Yes, i do mean the E58 gearboxes. The shafts look somewhat different from those you picture, i assume because the ST162 run unequal length shafts.

    Do note, you do still get some torquesteer with this setup, but it is much better than with unequal length shafts.

    Yeah, I cant stress how right takai is about this.
    My old 1.2L civic with less torque than your arm used to torquesteer quite severely - to the point where it could get a bit scary at times.
    My current 4agze ae82, with a respectable 240nm at the wheels barely and rarely torque steers at all. It's VERY tame. I credit the equal length drive shafts since they're the only appreciable difference in basic design between the civic and corolla.

    This is how my current shafts look too.
    I am currently looking at installing a V6, so that may solve some of the problems, & I've got 2 ST205 front shafts at home (one missing the inner CV cup) so maybe I might have a use for them now.
    Are the splines at the gearbox end the same for all of them.
    eg will SW20 Turbo inner CVs fit into the box of a non turbo?

    I'm thinking they probably won't. The ones pictured are the smaller splines used on the 4 cly box (S54 or something) the E series 2WD boxes (mr2 turbo and V6 camry) have much bigger splines. I'm not sure what box the NA mr2 uses but it is probably the smaller S series

    no im pretty sure the turbo and non turbo sw20 shafts have a different inner spline.

    FWD (ie corolla) 4A-GZE driveshafts (for E58 gbox) are equal length - ie the longer shaft is mounted to the block so that the inner CV joint is close to the outer joint.... just like on an SW20.
    ...... butt scratcher?!
