My failed muffler design

If you are willing to have a crack at a totally different design Bill, a gun silencer is the model i have been keen to scale up to a full sized muffler. Should have nothing to impede flow as just a series of lots od small expansion chambers. The killer is weight as all the baffle plates would soon add up, even if made from light guage. I was thinking that alloy plate would probably handle the heat as doesn't melt until over 800 deg and exhaust gases should have cooled well below that by the rear muffler?

I have seen a similar design work OK on stationary diesels but wasn't pretty and some effort would have a much nicer design.

What do you think?

Well I'm sure the Yanks must have silencers in the surplus stores over there for pistols that have about the same bore size as your TT V8.
They'd have to be cheap enough to try.

LOL might be onto something there....don't want to disturb the neighbours when firing off a few rounds from your cannon...they might take offense and have an even bigger gun

If restriction is your biggest concern, you do know you can get mufflers and resonators using a straight-through design that don't have anything protruding into the air-flow path? The resonator and muffler on the Celica looks like a perforated tube with lots of holes drilled into it (this is situated in the guts of it), you can see clearly through it and nothing actually sticks into the air path.

rolls royce and bentley (1966-1979 about) had a similar muffler actuly they have a few weird designs round ones and triangle ones im not shaw what they are like inside but there are very quite.

Fair enough

I know the reasons for trying to reduce restrictions in the exhaust, but I can't really see how you can better the perforated tube design. Your idea definately seemed interesting though, shame theory doesn't equal real world. Smaller holes seem like the next approach though, or different shape holes as a few other people have suggested. The trial and error should be fun
