    Default Oil in turbo lines

    Hey all

I undid my IC pipe the other day and there was oil dripping off it, not alot but it was there. I have had mixed answers as to what it is.

Some people say that is what an oil catch can does, i always thought they had to do with water or something (i have no idea what they do)

Other people say that means your seals are going on your turbo's.

I just thought i would put it to you guys and see what you think.

    Thanks

it should be the seals on the turbo, very common symptom.

do you have crankcase vent hose on the intake? if not then the oil could only be from the turbo.

sorry this is the only pic i have hosted and it takes a while to get the car out to take a pic.

see near the toytoa wording on the IC pipe off the turbo? see under that there is a little black pipe that runs to where my intake splits to the two turbos? is that what your refering too?

if its standard piping there should be a hose from the pcv valve to somewhere on the intake. im not too familiar with 1g's so i dont know where it is.
have a look at the piping straight off the turbo, if there is no oil there i doubt it would be turbo seals.

Haha i don't know about you, but if i had oil all through my intake and intercooler piping i'd be worried about plenty of other things before what my BOV sounded like

nah i just imagined it sounding wet , but yeah i don't want it leaking fluids and its very marginal, its not like i am losing oil, i reckon about 6 drops came out the IC

the crankcase is ventilated into the T where the pipe from the AFM splits in 2 into the turbos.

its normal, mine has plenty of oil in it as well. also helps to stop my budget IC piping from rusting

see picture below - crankcase breather highlighted in your fav colour, pink

    Hi Gav,
Don't let it worry you yet. When the turbos start leaving an exhaust trail of smoke then its an issue. Remember they are about 15 years old so expect a bit of oil to go through.

Not to mention due for 100'000 service and probably need rebuilding (and yes as far as i know this is true although the motor isn't quite 15, just the car is)

the pink line i drew is partially incorrect.

thats not the exact route of that pipe.

on that T piece, there is 2 smaller pipe outlets, one goes to the idle control valve, and heads off in that direction ---->.

the other small hose goes that way ^^^ away from the T piece to rocker cover.

ideally, the catch-can would get crank-case fumes from both cam covers, have it's own filtered breather (for when the crankcase wants to suck in air) and a filtered vent to the inlet (post AFM and pre-turbo).

Given that the motor is getting on a but and generates a fair amount of crankcase fumes, it would be more sensible to let the PCV valve feed those fumes into the inlet manifold (and when not boosting, the manifold vacuum will help scavange those fumes from the crankcase).

I wouldn't worry about it too much mate. Ask Norbie how much oil he poured out of his intercooler

My 1g used to get a bit of blow by, if you worried that this is the issue go out get yourself a catch can to put in between your crank case vent and your intake, so inturn your oil goes in there rather than in your intake, if you still get oil in there well, boost the hell out your turbos and enjoy em while they last.
