    Default 7M-GE Rod Knock

I have just developed a distinct rod knock in my Cressy and guess what the oil level was low. I have done some searching and found that this is probably the next most common failure after the BHG on these wonderful engines.

Question is can it be fixed just by having the crank reground and fit new undersize bearings or is there likely to be more serious damage.

For example if the big end gets too lose I may have been running the pistons into the head or I may have bent/distorted the big end caps.

Should I just drive out to the importers and buy a new engine and fit that with a few new gaskets etc or pull the 7m apart and hope there is not too much damage??

Well for starters if its as bad as you are saying ....... Dont drive it anymore !!!!! Have the motor pulled down and the crank checked to see if it can be salvaged. Running the engine will only make things worse if you decide to keep it and give it a rebuild.

Up to you in the end. Can you afford to rebuild?

Do you want to pay XXXX amount to get a wrecker engine that might only last a year or so, or spend the money on a rebuild that you know you wont have probs with ??

I know that makes sense but 1jZ chaser front cuts are getting hard to find.

OK here are the machining costs alone.

Crank grinding, reboring, rod resizing and cylinder head shaving. Including all the other important steps not mentioned comes to about $750.

Parts will be about $600 for new rings bearing pistons and a few gaskets.

    Total cost approx $1350.

this is utter bollocks, whoever told you this is not taking you seriously, maybe bring a nice deposit with you next time you walk into an importers workshop and see how hard they are to get.

yeah, they're getting rarer, but by no means hard to find, but i guess everythings hard to find if your not actually looking.

I did ring importbitz and they are all sold. I don't know why they are on their website anyway if they are all sold. Maybe just advertising the fact that they are possible to get.
