    Default 4K-C carby query

dunno if anyone still plays with carbies nowadays..? I know I try to avoid them..

But looks like my carbie on my 4K in my bunky 81 KE70 Corolla has given up. I think the jets are blocked or something cos it just keeps stalling (won't idle). and this morning it wouldn't even start.

There's been tinkering done with idle and mixture screws, but can't get it to operate properly. Carby cleaner doesn't seemed to have made much difference either.

Easiest solution - unbolt it and stick another carby on..

My question is - do the later model carby's from the "Hi-Cam" engine bolt on?
or is there another carby thats easy to get hold of that I can bolt onto this motor?..
If there's room for improvement/more power... I may as well go with that. Stuff payin $$ for the same crappy low power carby..

From what I can remember the "Hi-Cam" engines are absolutely identical to the earlier 4Ks. The Hi-Cam moniker was just a marketing ploy to try and con people into buying the KE70 even though it was still pushrod. As for bolt-on options, a Nikki carby bolts straight on with a little modification, for some small gains (I've got one but haven't gotten around to rebuilding it and installing it on Billie). Plenty of other ones should fit (pretty standard bolt pattern), best place to look is in the Rollaclub FAQ

THIS should help out a bit, if it wants you to sign into Rollaclub just tell me and I'll post up the guts of it.

    Thanks Hiro!
Exactly what i was looking for

I have access to a "hi-cam" carby off a mate who's wrecking his KE70.. so I'll probably just go with that.. but good to know there are a couple of others with the same bolt pattern to slap on.

    cheers

the gemini adaptor from redline fits the K series and then you can use weber downdraught.
but until you wake up the motor there is no need.

the air cleaner is restrictive on KE70.

check for vacuum leaks first. at the manifold and from various pipes or whatever. pulling the carby to check the jets is easy... just take the top off and look in.
the jets are the little brass looking things. they are piss easy to pull down and screw together again.
is it Aisan carbs that have the hollow bolt? (or satto ones?) check it hasn't gotten loose and fallen down.

Yeah a blocked fuel filter can cause all sorts of havoc

very easy to change the ke70 ones too.

It was getting fuel when we checked it over the weekend.. but it seemed to be an inconsistent flow from the main jet.. so thats why I thought maybe the carby was stuffed.

I will swap it and see if it makes a difference. Otherwise I'll be looking at fuel filter and maybe even the fuel pump ?

just pull the fuel line off and turn it over, see if it pumps into something to catch the precious fluid in
if no precious fluid comes out of fuel line, work out why.
if it does, its carby issue...if it is infact a fueling issue.
if i were you, and the carby is the issue i would get your mates one and put a carby kit through it. its a bit fiddly but atleast you know it wont leak etc

is this part of the carby?
if this is the problem - it will be replaced when I wak a new carby on..?

love ke70 - thanks for the tip.. might pay to do your little test so we can locate the problem by narrowing down where the fuel is being stopped.

    Cheers!

its attached to the carby, has the power lead going to it. on passengers side...its green from memory, yes it will be swapped when you swap carbs but this would be much easier to do if this is the problem...

one trick ya can do, as i used to do all the time on my padock cars, cos there would not run a fillter most of the time, yeah used to get dush and shit blocking up the jets, so instead of pulling the carby down first i would swap number 3and 4 spark plug leads around, and i would do it with the fillter off, and start the car, and run it, and try to rev it up the 1500rpm and back off and keep pumping the acc, and it back fires up the carby and blows the shit out. well 9 times out of 10 it did but yes i would think it will be the idle solinoid, there pritty mmuch the same as on all other jap made cars, i had a suzuki 4x4 one on my 4k once, the other thing ya can do is undo the wire and unscrew the solinoid a bit till it idles and that will get u buy
