    Default ra23 conversion

hey guys. just joined this site and seems to be full of good info. my names Ben and im from adelaide SA.
im looking at buying a pair of celicas. one is a ta22, poor condition how ever it is running a 2t-geu with twin solex's. the other is a ra23, imaculate but has a 18r with stuffed rings.
ive been offered the pair for 1500 bucks.
i would just like to know if it would be worth putting the 2t into the ra or just rebuilding the 18r. does the 2t make more power or would it be too much hassle doing the swap.
its going to be my daily driver so i just want something reliable and enough squirt to have a bit of fun every now and then.
any help would be much appreciated.
    cheers
    Ben

    2t won't immediately fit a ra23.
will fit a ta23, but you dont' have one of those

rebuild the 18r for the experience

OR, better still, go 1g, depends on the money you have.

to put the 2t into the ra23 you would need a TA23 crossmember, found in TA23

not worth it, but you said it is a 2tgeu which means it is efi but some one has put twin solexes on it.

1500 bucks thats cheap, if your not interested show me where they are

2tg isnt a bad motor would be good for a daily i reackon, but its all up too you,

post some pics up of these too,

Buy them both, wreck the TA22, sell me the 2tgeu and some of the interior parts you dont want and with the money from selling me the 2tg do up the 18rc on the RA 23 .
Seriously it would be worth your while to buy both and get your hands dirty with rebuilds and engine swaps.

Search is your friend. The brake, diff, engine swap for a 1g has been talked about and done heaps on here.

cool. thanks for everyones help. would the 18r be a better motor to do up than the 2tgue? putting the motor in wont be a problem as i have all the x members etc as they are in the ta22. the only reason i like the 2t idea is coz its twin cam and it also has a 5 speed rather than the auto thats behind the 18r.

TA22 crossmember does not fit in an RA23. If you want a T series engine in your RA23 you'll need to source a TA23 crossmember, which isn't all that easy. If you like the idea of a twincam engine your best bet is to track down an 18R-G (they pop up for sale around here fairly regularly) as that will bolt right in and it has the benefit of being a 2 litre engine so will get the old girl moving a lot better than a 2T-G. A manual conversion is very easy to do so that's not a problem.

Abandon the idea of rebuilding or "doing up" the single cam 18R-C clunker right now, you'll spend a fair bit of money and be very disappointed with the outcome. If you do anything at all you should start with an 18R-G as a minimum, or if the budget stretches far enough look into a later-model engine conversion such as the 1G-GTE as suggested earlier. Or if you're on a very tight budget and want to keep the 18R-C for now, just get a running engine from the wreckers or something - whatever you do though DON'T spend actual money on an 18R-C!

if you like the twin cam then do what airfireman said except sell the 18R as well and buy an 18R-G which is the twin cam version of the 18R

is there much involved in swapping to the 18rg? also can i use the 5 speed from the 2t if i get the right bellhousing or wont it be strong enough?
roughly how much is it costing people to do the 1ggte conversion excluding motor cost

18R-G swap is very straightforward if you get the twin-carb version, it's the same block so it will bolt right in, there's just a few minor plumbing changes. No you can't use the 2T gearbox (T50), you'll need a W50 for an R series engine.

    to put it roughly

    Car RA28 - bought privately
    $2200

    1GGTE - from engine importer
    $950

Moddify Wiring - done by myself
    $200

Front brake upgrade - done by me - machining outsourced
    $750

fuel system upgrade - depending on what pumps you buy
    $400-$600

intercooler and piping - ebay cooler and scrap pipes
    $200-$300

f series diff - bought from wrecker
    $200

lsd and new bearings and seal
    $300-$500

    reweld diff to fit
    $400-$500

so your looking at 3500 - 4000 just in the basics.
and if you can do all that work or not.

im expecting $3000 - $4000 by the time im finished and im doing the majority of fabrication
and wiring and fitting, and ive scored a few bargains along the way too.

There is a black one rolling around adelaide with an immaculate 1G-GZE install.

not sure if it is an RA23 or TA22, i don't know celicas. wasn't the one with the mustang back.

Regency will approve anything so long as you do it properly.
but they will probably want you to strengthen the chassis

An 18R-G will be easier to get through regency, may only need a brake upgrade to get through.
