Yes it would be the bluepaint and as long as it is the right paint to withstand exhaust temperature i.e. proper exhaust paint it should stop smoking and smelling after a couple of days of use.
Finally got the 18RG into my RA23. I used new Pacemaker extractors and when we ran the engine for the 1st time, smoke came from the exhaust side of the engine. Did not look like a leak (nuts done up pretty tight), and it smelled funny too. Could it be that the (blue) paint/coating on the extractors caused the smoke? What is the point of that stuff? Will it stop smoking after a little while, or is something wrong?

Had similar experience, went after a day and hasn't been an issue since.

Yeah, if it was the VHT exhaust or engine paint then have a look on the side of the can. It actually says to expect it to smoke a bit at first. It is all good, if its still doing it after several hours of curing then maybe look harder at it. Scowling works i hear![]()

Yup, basically every exhaust product smokes for a while, whether it be paint, gasket sealer, or even some gaskets. It's incredibly unnerving sometimes though. And it smells bad, and people look at you most strangely! Just monitor it and make sure everything cures properly.
Thanks for that guys. I just drove it to an exhaust place to get a 2 1/4" installed. Smoke wasn't too bad while driving. Sound was pretty good though (just stuck the old exhaust into the extractors about 100 mm, didn't worry about the leaks).
She already drives better than with the 18RC, and that is before tuning.
i once bought a lovely new set of extractors that were chrome, first start the paint all flaked off. i was concerned cause it looked so good, when i bought them, but that is supposidly what happens

The other thing it can be is just some oily handprints from installation etc. The oil will just smoke off as it gets hot, it doesn't take much oil to make noticable smoke.

i had pacemaker exhaust fitted to my hilux 22r. And it did the same thing as well. So as everyone else has said in this thread. The smoke is normal.

After about 20km's the smoking stopped. Got the exhaust fitted this morning and a mate tuned it (Thanks Brett). Still pretty noisy, but drives heaps better now.
my extractors are bare metal, but when i dropped in the 20v i got a full exhaust done at the same time. the guy sprayed it black so it would look cool. on the way home when it started smoking i freaked out.
the problem is it didnt stop smoking all week. then i found out the drive shaft boot had cracked and grease had gone all over my flex pipe.
have a look to see if there is any oil/grease on the pipe, just to be safe.
that happened to mine aswell so i went and got them porcelen coated now they are all chrome and pretty and theres no way that its going to peal off.
cheers
matt
