RWD 4AGE Overheating Problem

How well is the engine earthed ???? This can cause all sorts of probs with stuff like that.

you say its basicly been like this since the motor has been in the car. Have you left of an earth ??

was gonna say, where is Cool1 when you need him

run alligator clip from body of the temp sender to the battery -ve

then run power and earth cables directly to the gauge...

you wouldn't happen to be using a TA22 gauge with a 4AG sender? different gauge often = different sender..
i would borrow a VDO off someone just to check...

The problem is that i have checked the gauge with another one and it still does the same thing.

I havent left off an earth but i will recheck all of them. Thanks for the idea.

Yeah i will give that a try. I am using a 4a sender with a ta22 gauge. But even when i tried the sensor out of my 2t in the 4a (screws in just the same) it still had exactly the same problem. So it seems they are the same.

maybe get an aftermarket gauge and sender?
i know the readings might not be accurate but maybe try a mechanical speco or similar cheap gauge just to check

It might sound silly, but is the engine actually getting hot? Does it have the overheating engine smell? Are any/all of the hoses hot?

I concur that it sounds like the gauge is screwy. I'll also reitterate that you need to use the sender the gauge is usually paired to (eg TA22 dash needs 2T sender) but it seems you are on top of that too.

check that after a quick run around the block how ur bottom hose feels hot? or warm..

i'd imagine at 120 degrees the water would be boiling something fierce.. (even with the coolant)

yeh i'm with the gauges..w hy not just ignore the watever gauge u have there, and wire up an electric aftermarket gauge that you're sure is accurate, problem solved.. that way u'd be sure if the water is really getting hot or it's just the original gauge that's scewy? toyota's original gauges for older cars tend to get tempermental with age

it would be just about impossible for a temperature difference of 50c from the top of the engine to the top of the radiator.

and like others have said if it was 120c at the radiator it would be very close/boiling.
so im betting both gauges are playing shinannigans, or a wiring problem.
try warming the car up, and when it starts playing up again move the wiring loom around and see if that changes things
