    Default 4AGE Starter Motor Relocation

    Hi all

I'm wanting to move my starter motor on my 4AGE/C52 from it's default position on the exhaust side to the intake side. Last night though I found that only 1 hole lines up for the starter on the intake side.

Does this mean I need a 4AGZE starter motor to use the intake side?

I've found if I could get one bolt in I could drill the bellhousing on the other side to fit another bolt?

    What would be best?

No difference between the 4AGZE place and 4AGE. I have a GZE converted to GTE sittin in my garage with the starter in the exact same place... unless it was swapped with the conversion.

AE92/AE101 GZE starter is on the inlet side, smallport 4age is on the exhaust side.

You can use a GZE or a 20V starter, the 20V's are on the inlet side too.

    Hi All...

Yes the starter motor can not be simply shifted from one side to the other... Unfortunetly, the other side has one of the ends a little bit elongated. IE: It's not a geometrical mount.

But when I had a look at it, just about any starter motor from Camry, 3sge/gte, 20v, etc, as long as the mounting does not look geometrical, it shoudl fit...

    Hope that helps...

Okay, looks like I'll be searching for a new starter then.

No one's tried to drill the bellhousing before? The starter has little grooves on it which allow you to line it up to what I believe is the correct position. Then a mounting hole simply needs to be drilled.

Of course I don't have my block on me atm so I can't see if it will foul the block.

i don't know if they fit at all, but during some trips to the wreckers for another started motor for my 4age, i noticed most fwd 4afe engines have the starter on the inlet side.

you cant just swap it around as the starter will turn the engine over in the wrong direction.

No it won't. The engine will always spin clockwise and the starter will always spin anti-clockwise, regardless of it's position on the flywheel.

Thanks guys, I'll have a gander at some 4AFE starters.

I picked up a 4AFE starter the other day. They fit perfectly, althought it's a lot bigger beefier unit compared to the 4AGE one. It's almost twice as big in fact and I don't have my block atm to check if it even clears it.

While I was at the wreckers I checked the Camry 3S-FE and these will NOT work as they are on the gearbox side and not the engine side. The 4A-C ones also don't work.

It's such a big ugly Bosch unit, I'm wondering if anyone know if the 20V starters are this big?

Have just finished doing this conversion on my car, as JP stated you can use 20v starters and GZE units on the inlet side. Only thing I found out is make sure you know what flywheel you are running as GZE or "E" series starters are different to standard 20v in it location by a very small amount.
