GO autronic or Haltech
I have autronic and mate of mine has a Haltech both are on 4AGZE in AE86's
very good puters for good price
There must be somebody dude. Some dyno places might do it for you?Originally Posted by cerby

If you buy an Autronic of an authorised dealer (there is one in Tassie- www.autronic.com)
and your motor is reasonably standard they should be able to provide you with a program that is very close so you wouln't have to go to a dyno.
e-freedom, obviously is in japanese, but it looks like a stock toyota/bosh ecu - is it an addon for the stock ecu?
Garth, I see you have Microtech right at the bottom. ive seen a few 20v's running Haltech ECU's and they dont seem to be able to get as much power as with the Microtech? are you suggestions based soley on 4age's 16v motors or would you still go by those reccomendations for the 20v also?Originally Posted by ae86drift
Both Jeremey and Craig have managed to crack 90RWKW with the microtech after a proper tune i know one person with a Haltech who only has 75RWKW. i understand it comes down to tuning, but is it harder to get a decent tuned map with the Haltechs as with the microtech's?
And also can you justify your list for me please so it could help make decisions for those who are looking into buying an aftermarket ecu, ie why you feel one is better than the other?
thanks
well i can justify E&E freedom- the thing like reads how you drive and adapts the best tune to suit your style and needs (on the fly).
i can see the problem of using a mircotech ltx8 etc (cheaper ecu's) on an engine that isnt under alot of stress. the pac mx6 runs a microtech for gods sake! and about 90% of all the quick pac cars do.
you get what you pay for though. power fc has alot less function than a microtech.

Pretty much any ECU wont have a problem getting you max power. Heck a carby can do that.
It really comes down to driveability, injector control etc. Also how well it compensates for changes, air, etc.
I find the Autronic really good, has very fine control over the injectors, lots of load points. Also when its on the dyno, it doesn't matter how many runs you do depending on temp etc the power curve keeps plotting itself over the same line. I think that proves its a good thing.
yeah i haven't heard anything bad about the autronic, and i know alot of the wrx boys rave on about them (including my tuner).

it's funny when ppl talk abotu having economy and power maps and the like..... really is there that much difference?Originally Posted by 45aken
for both power and economy, you want to get the MOST power out of a given amount of fuel, and the difference is how much air is in there....
in a WELL TUNED motor, you will have just one map. the light throttle and cruise area will be lean/economical, and the power areas will be a little rich to preserve motor/get most power safely.
about the only thing i cna think of that would need to change is the amount of extra fuel for throttle tip in... to affect transient response... but a decent ECU should have enough control over accel enrich to not warrant this..
i would like to know what it means to be able to tune to your driving style and needs... is this just closed loop? or what does this adaptive learning actually change?
for auto gearboxes, changes in speed of gearchange and rpm they hold to in each gear is adaptive, but for the engine?? fuel, spark.... you kind of have a limited range or "best tune"?
as for microtech on drag cars....
almost ANY EFI system can do a drag car.. they have a VERY limited range of fucntions needed and a very limited range of tuning needed.. ie idle (kind of) and WOT (and maybe staging)... heck, top fuel dragsters run carby.
as Joel said, it's about flexibility and ability to compensate rather than power (power is the tuner, not the ECU).
i would personally choose an ECU based on it's ability to correct for temperature, atmospheric pressure (on startup.. 2 MAPs only needed for mountain living methinks), warmup, and the range of tuning options for transient engine states (accel, cruise, etc etc tc) as long as it can basically control the mechical hardware also.
