Ditch the 380cca battery.
Replace with 550cca battery.
Install amp.
Enjoy the music.
As long as you are not going for world record dB, the stock alternator is good enough.
Just make sure your cabling is up to the task.
Gday all,
I've got a 1JZ in an MX73 Cressida and Im looking at upgrading the alternator before I add another battery and 4 channel amp. At the moment I have the standard 380cca battery, Boss IQ 4ch amp running an audiopipe 12" sub. At night my headlights dim when I have the stereo turned upto about medium volume.
How many amps are the 1JZ alternators rated at? And is there a way to upgrade it without many modifications? I have been searching around a fair bit and the most promising option I've found is that apparently the 2JZ-GE amp swaps over if it has the right plug, and is rated at about 100 amps?
I also come across this thread

Any info would be very much appreciated

thats what I originally wanted to do. Replace the old 380cca with the Supercharge 660cca battery I got, and install it in the boot.
The local car audio place here said that it would be easier and cheaper to keep both batteries and run an isolation switch to use the supercharge mounted in the boot to run the amps.
So the stock alternator should be able to feed both batteries? WHat are they rated at?
Haha nah I'm not chasing world record dB, I just want a good source of power going to my amps. The other amp is an old school 4x100rms Rockford Fosgate, and will be powering a set of RF X162S splits and T1693 6x9's.
How much should I expect to pay, to get the old battery taken out and just run the Supercharge from the boot?
it would be cheaper and simpler to replace the one battery and run a substantial cable (starting with a big fuse) from the battery back to the amps.
The alternator could charge both batteries as long as they're both not badly discharged - but why bother when one battery would have ample capacity to run 2 amps.
Ditto on what Peewee said. Battery is too small. Also are ALL your earth leads big enough and have a clean mounting point....
If you are using the factory alternator wiring, upgrade it.
Its only 2x10gauge or something.
Replace it with a single 4 gauge instead.
2 x 4gauge earths from block to chassis.
2 x 4guage earths from battery to chassis.
1 x 4guage earth on each amp.

Thats it. I want to just use the one battery and mount it in the boot, just depends on how much they qoute me to get it done.it would be cheaper and simpler to replace the one battery and run a substantial cable (starting with a big fuse) from the battery back to the amps.

Only problem with just running the 1 battery upfront then running a power cable down to the amp, are that there is hardly enough room to squeeze my standard battery in let alone a decent 600ca sized battery. Would be great to just have one battery in the boot and free up space in the engine bay.
yep i will definitely be upgrading the alternator wires. Is 4 gauge the minimum you would recommend? Would 0/1 gauge be a bit too over the top?If you are using the factory alternator wiring, upgrade it.

4 gauge handles 150A, so itself is over kill.

Oh, and a 550cca battery is the same size as your 380cca battery (I think, it fits in the standard tray anyway).
Its when you go to 600cca that they become bigger.

I'll stick with the 4 gauge then lol

Yea they are, I seen some pretty decent 550cca batteries that fit or are even smaller than the stock battery, but i got this battery really cheap and I've always wanted to put the battery in the boot closer to the amps and free up some engine bay space.
The battery is a Supercharge battery rated at 660cca @ -18degrees and has a reserve capacity of 160 and I only paid $110 for it brand new with 24month warranty. Only thing is that it ways sh*tloads!
