removing sound deadening

how to do you go about it use a heatgun and a scraper or something..

just dont wanna ruin the paint underneath

i took my deadner off in places . I used a paint scraper and a hammer and tapped mine off. My car is is almost 40 years old so it came off fairly easy. It did leave some marks on the paint though.

Im not sure how well a heat gun will work but at a guess id say it will help. As for the paint underneath not being damaged when you get the stuff off....... dont hold your breath.

I think it will be a trial and error thing as almost every car will be different in how it comes off.

i'm going to try dry ice pellets ($36 for 5kg from Air Liquide) followed by belting the frozen stuff with mallet

i spent a few hours today with a scraper and hammer doing the rear drivers side footwell in the MZ10 and there's heaps of glue residue left and multiple scratches in the primer.

you could try a soft alloy spatula and heat gun but you'll still have the glue residue left to deal with

not a bad idea about using a alloy scraper.
I have seen nylon ones before this mabe the go providing they are stiff enough to actually get the stuff off with.

CHUCK: you mabe able to remove the glue with some form of solvent ???? IE thinners etc etc

My personal favourite is petrol and a match. (And yes I have actually done it, but the section of floorpan was out of the car).
Dry ice is supposed to work well, haven't used it myself. I used heat gun and scraper, it will damage the paint underneath but not hard to repaint. Petrol works well for cleaning up the glue. For the underside of my car I used a big wire wheel and then had it sandblasted and primed.

Theres no ezy way of doing this (unless you have an apprentice) hammer & scraper is the way i've done it in the past.

As for not damaging the paint underneath , its gunna happen no mater what.

The dry ice idea sounds good Chuck , should work in theory. let us know how it goes

Hmmm... Tak baby hit the nail on the head with that one... I remember reading that thread, twas a good thread, yet to use the method, but will in due course with the RA23. Heat gun and a paint scraper sounds like a mess waiting to happen.

I used the rounded end of a ball pien hammer.
It cracks right off.

I took all of mine off with a long flat screw driver and a hammer... By cracking chunks off...

It works well when it's cold (I.E. 10 deg or so). On hot days it's a pain as the sound deadener is soft and flexible...

If you're really carefel you should be able to get it all off without marking the pain. Nothing a bit of sanding and a spray can can't fix though.

I managed to get a bit over 20kg from my AE86 by doing this.

i did an entire ke25 corolla with dry ice pellets and some tools to pry it off.
took tar off floorpan, transmission tunnel, firewall, firewall intake cavity etc... everything.

i used the pellets in a plastic bag to form it over awkward spots and some bricks to prop up the ice even more on certain high sections. also used sprayed water to get it colder quicker if needed but it usually starts to crack after a few minutes and
comes off pretty easy with a big flathead screwdriver / slightly blunted 15mm chisel or 2 inch metal scraper. use a hammer on the chisel to ease off stubborn parts. it still left small sticky spots which can be taken off with a scraper later, maybe that citrus cleaner
would work too on the small spots as its pretty awesome gear

i had long gloves to avoid getting burned and its damn cold! its probably best to do the whole process when its a cold evening. it took maybe a few kilo of pellets, ended up being about $50 from a gas company.

didnt end up trying the heat gun method as i thought it would get messy but seems
some people have had luck with it remember to prime the floor as there will be lots
of cuts from scraping for rust to form.

2 buckets of the stuff in the end, about 10 to 12kg. now i can repair all the hidden rust
sections!

the sound deadening in my two is all out, i imagine its been don dry ice style as there isnt any chips into the paint work its all been very neatly removed.

and remember when doing this.. well ventilated area. use of dry ice can turn the atmosphere in your enclosed shed into a bit of a death trap

It's true! I spent a long time with a hammer and chisel before I tried using it though unfortunately, just pour it onto the hard sound deadening and it will soften to goo in a few minutes, then simply wipe off. I've seen lots of patchy results with dry ice, and some even worse looking results by people who just chip it off, but with the solvent it leaves a perfectly clean finish, doesn't even hurt the undercoat.



That tin was about $6 from memory from Mitre-10, you'd probably need two cans to do the whole car though, as I'd chipped a lot of it away by hand before I used this stuff.
