Rust Repairs

Hi folks, Ive been thinking about having a go at cutting out and repairing some rust in one of my MA61's. I thought Id pop on here and ask you guys for any advice or web links. I will be starting from scratch so I'll need to buy a few tools. I dont have any experience with body work before but its something Ive wanted to try for a while.

So any advice is welcome.

chop out sections that are rusty, then recreate them from non-rusty bits of steel and weld em in.... thats about all i know so far

make sure you use that product when treating small bits of rust, or coating around the area u have removed, have always used it for bits and pieces and it best stuff on market !

There are plenty of basic pannelbeating/ spraypaining books around.
Buy one, basic hammer and dolly set and a mig welder and practice on some old pannels before you start on your car.

Depends were the rust is. if its just sheet, easy.If its structual id have a pro look at it and fix it, if you havnt done much before!

yeah id get a book before you start, its easy to do a crap job and difficult to do a good one. an automotive body book should cover from basics all the way to advanced.

cutting is pretty easy - air hacksaw and grinder etc... it makes the job a lot easier if
you cut out a section that is easy to form and easy to weld in.

then form a new section of metal which can be difficult and time consuming to get right if its an odd shape or easy if its a simple shape etc...

them weld it in, which also requires skill not to warp the metal and to do a good weld that
doesnt burn through but does penetrate deep enough for a strong join etc... there are a few different welders to and techniques but mig welding is popular, as its easy to learn and fairly easy to use.

thats if you dont need to panel beat sections which is quite a subject itself with hammers and dollys and techniques etc

Cheers. My father in-law is a boilermaker and has a mig welder so he is going to lend it to me and teach me how to weld. So Im not so worried about that part. The tricky part as I see it is shaping the new metal to suit.

In an RA28 I used to own there was some rust in the seam of the door. I put a bunch of fish oil in there and in 3 years it never progressed any further. Since then when I change cars I spend half a day and fish oil it. Its a good idea to use the de-odourised stuff though.

Hi, I dunno much but I'll tell you what I did last time ... Well its depends on the condition and how much rust it is ... I fix the rust on my mate 1983 XT Celica last time ... there was rusts at rear fender, below fuel door and driver side door all about 50cents size is rust. What I did was I wet& dry sand it down to almost bare metal and respray it ... Was quite a dodgy work but turn out OK ... For the rear hatch was rusted badly and holes everywhere. What I did was sand it down to bare metal and use bodyfiller to patch up the holes. Wait til it dry and sand to smooth it again. I then put primer and respray it. Please note that due to my friend need to get his car pass the pit so I just do some basic fixing as adviced by a guy in supercheap auto. If you wanted quality fixing then this is not recommended ... hope this help

Its the same as any other rust converter, they all use phosphoric acid.

forget rust converter - throw it in the bin - buy PPC POR-15

Read the docs... you are meant to use rust converter before laying down a coat of POR15 rust preventative paint.
