how you doing this?
with a mid-rear sump and std steering?
or rack and pinion steering and a front sump?
i have both sumps and my project shell i can measure for you.
cheers
Nathan
Can someone with a 1GGTE RA23 /28 (standard cross member) please measure the cutout in the sump? Preferably a dimension from the sump plug to the edge of the cutout.
Cheers
Stu

you just need to sort of push the bulge bit in. I just put a cut accross it, belted it with a hammer and welded the cut back up.
Hello.
yeah, I found the same, just smack in where the little bulge is and make it even the whole way across... was close in my TA23 with RA cross member but when I put it into my
RA28 there wa\s about 10mm more clearance... it's just trial and error til it clears. put the sump back on and trialled it 3/4 times before I have hit it in enough.

I was looking more into cutting an welding - not much of a fan with the hammer. I think I'll dock if off about 10mm from the bulge and test it.

That would be tops TA. I'm hoping to get the motor in tomorrow![]()
yeah your only looking at a 10 -15 mm clearance issue Stu.'
sorry for the delay

No worries. I cut the sump on the weekend. Theres about 20mm clearance. Although the motor seems to be sitting too far forward - I can't even get the radiator in! I may have to chop the mounts on the cross member. The mounts off the GZE seem to sit the motor at the right angle and height without requiring any further chopping. Although it did require a mod to the oil return line.
not my car but same positioning.
by using the front most bolt holes on the gearbox cross member - bolted to the the rear most bolt holes on the chasis - gives the above positioning.
From all acounts this makes it fit.
from my experience it doesnt.
but the Radiator is 30mm off the radiator support.
so but cutting the sheet metal under the support and welding it further forward should gain you another 30mm clearnace.
Im actually going to be using an X1 Excell radiator - 3 cored - inline with the radiator support to resolve clearance.

if you were to do it properly, youd scallop out a piece and weld in a piece of ~2.5 - 3" exhaust pipe.
that was how i would have done it but my sump was already moulded (with a hammer) when i got it
hello
Brett - Thats a damn fine idea.
TA22 - It is interesting that we both have the same problem, but no one else hasDoes yours give seem to sit 10mm into the radiator?
