Paint to use on bare block?

Hi all,

Ok I have just got my block back from the machine shop and it is now time to add some paint to the outside before it begins to rust...





Now my questions is what is the best type of paint to use that will last the miles? Is any heat proof pressure pack going to do the job??

just get engine enamel. lasts forever. any auto shop will have it. vht stuff is the goods

yeah you can pick up engine enamel from Auto Shops or even places like Bunnings, etc. I would paint it black, that way you won't see the oil leaks!!!

TheDarkRaver, are they o-ring grooves or very thick sleeves? Know nothing about that engine.

I heard somewhere in the racing engine building scene that some people paint the inside of the engines to help stop the oil sticking or getting contaminated or something WTF!

Forget the paint job - polish it up and get it gold plated

The only thing I've painted on an engine is a sump and used engine enamel from a can - can't remember the brand but it cracked

What machining did you have done and how much did it cost?

Ok thanks guys it looks like im off to the local auto shop to get a few cans tomorrow..

Yeh they are o-rings, I got the blocked bored .5mm to fit a set of forged pistons in, the crank rods etc balanced, new little ends pressed in and a few other little bits n peices.. Now the fun part of putting it all together..

A good tip for blocking up all the threaded bolt holes on the block (you'll obviously mask up the top of the block & install your welsh plugs) is a whole bunch of earplugs, particularily if you can get them free from work. Just like installing them in your ears you roll them up to compress them, stick them in the holes & they'll expand & form a nice tight plug that is easy to remove once painted.
They give very nice results.

Use a large socket that fits snuggly, and tap it in, making sure it goes in flat and even.

Just like we say in the aircraft maintenance industry, if at first you don't succeed, get a bigger hammer!
Hammer & a block of wood to get it in straight, and if you're really keen a light smear of silastic around the edge before insertion.
