Default how to put a 1JZ in an RA23

when i first started looking at doing this there wasn't much info around so here is some info to get you on the way to heaps of power.
theres more than one way to skin a cat.......
but this is how i did it.
first, get a 1JZ. if you get an early one with a mid sump and non traction control then its all good.
the non traction control model has a long nose on the throttle body which you can cut back to give you more room to route your intercooler pipe past the radiator.

this shows the TB cut back.

you will find that there are some vacuum tubes underneath but you can re-route the tubes, no problem.

this is the holes blocked off.

you have to mod the sump.

60mm out of the back will see you right.

on the other side of the block is a oil level sensor. the motor will run just fine without it. cut the littel bugger off.

i left the top of it there to cover the hole.
right, now your motor is pretty much ready to go in the hole.
next step is to fix up the hole.....

right, stick with your standard crossmember, space it down by 15mm.

next cut off the original mounts and plate the CM like this.

the spacing is 480mm center to center

i also seam welded it right round.

these are the mounts i used, i have no idea what they are out of. if you know please tell me because they both tore in half when i crashed the car.

i had to space the turbo side up after i got the car on the road cauz the turbo touched the steering box. i just put a 10mm plate under the engine mount. you could get away with a 5mm spacer.

    next, mod the steering box.

i replaces the back bolt with a dome head cap screw and i ground the corners off the box.
i also slotted the holes in the box and dropped it down by 10mm.

i did the ideler side the same.

the bump steer is next to nothing according to the alignment machine

youll need to make a heat sheild for the steering box, the exhaust is very close to it.

    more to follow.

    the gearbox is a W55.

i used a clutch and bell housing combo fron dellow in sydney.
the pressure plate is out of a holden one ton ute and with the slave cylinder they supplied the clutch pedal was incredably heavy. it blew the seals in the master cylinder every month.
i found a much bigger one out of a toyota landcruzer and adapted that.

as you can see i had to slot the back hole. i also had to grind a groove in the bellhousing to clear the back of the slave.

the flywheel that came with it was way to heavy so i machined the back out of it, i removed just under half the weight.

i used the standard gear box CM..

and i had to move the mount points under the floor.

and i had to "mod" the floor to clear the starter motor, nothing to heavy though.

the radiator is standard size in the standard location, but its tripple core.
im running a 16" thermo fan in front of the rad.
i had nothing to do with the loom or the wireing but i can tell you that the motor was an auto and we just cut the auto part of the loom off at the bottom of the engine, never been a problem.

thats the basics, there are plenty of fine points that ive forgotten but all you have to do is ask.

    i just remembered something,
in the photo of the back of the flywheel you can see a small recess right on the edge of the smallest diamater. you need to machine this recess in to clear a small lump on the crank.
its about 1mm deep amd about 4mm bigger on diamater than the hole in the flywheel.
if you need the exact measurements just ask.

i changed so many things at once that its impossable to compare, but i will say this, 18RC poo with NO right foot steering vs point and shoot, no fucking questions asked. power, and shit loads of it, when you want it, at the touch of a toe. no comparisson.
    DO IT!!!!!!

I was waiting for this thread its awesome just one quick question did you have to shorten the tailshaft to compensate for the gearbox being further back? Im guessing the shifter position will also be different? Have you had any troubles with the w55 holding the power of the 1j? What diff are you also running?

yea i had to shorten the tail shaft but i cant remember by how much.
the shifter is further back but the standard center console still covers it and works well.
i put the drivers seat further back because im a tall bastard and if anything the stick is too far foreward.
the box is fine, even at the end of the development cycle for this motor (and i have lots planned) ill still be using the W55. they are well strong.
diff is crummydoor lsd, VL turbo. the diff works fine, pitty the fluck heads at keesbrough diffs couldnt put it in propperly.......
