    Default 4K pistons in 1G-GTE

So after reading all the threads I can find on rebuilding a 1G, it seems like I can use 4K pistons and rings...can anyone confirm this? I'd like to know how much it's going to change compression, make sure they're not going to interfere with valves...etc...

Because my spare motor looks like this...

mullett, I think most folks are going the other way, using the 1G pistons in a 4K. using the K in a G would require fly cutting of valve reliefs, an expensive operation. Surely the technology in a 1G would be superior to that in a "K" engine. I would send a sample piston from the dead "G" off to get some new ones made. You would be surprized what the piston makers might have on the shelf.

    cheers Chuck.

1G rods and pistons in a 4K drop the pistons 3mm down the bore (apparently) so that would suggest they would be 3mm proud in a 1G

also, the stock 4K pistons are shite. they crack and sometimes literally fall to pieces. the ACL aftermarket ones are ok tho... but the pin height is still probably too high to be useful or even desirable.
plus, no valve space as said above (might be ok for running, but not if belt breaks...)

Buy one piston for the engine. You should be able to get one from toyota as I bought a single piston last year for my big port. I went through a dealership in NZ because it was cheaper than going through a local dealership. I'll send you the details if you want it.

    Hi,

    Hmmm, I always regarded the 1G as just a 6 cylinder 4K.

Find some 1GGE pistons. Same design with 9:1 compression

There really isn't anything special about the 1GGTE pistons, so I can't see why not.

Mmm they would need to run at the same engine temp cos of the taper at the top that seals on the bore

if not the top diameter might be narrower in the gte version or have different co-efficient of expansion

can some with ge and gte pistons run a vernier over the top and bottom of the pistons?

If it's already grenaded one piston, is it worth assuming that the other 5 are still ok?

Just take a look at them, if uve gotta replace one it's a good oportunity to freshen up bearings and look for scorch marks anyway

That;s the plan, but I'm thinking I might be better off getting a gen3 block and freshening that up instead...
