i thought zero shaft play would be ideal really?
I'm buying a CT26 and the guy tells me it has 2-3mm in shaft play side to side. Is this an acceptible amount and what should a good turbo have in terms of shaft play??
Sorry for such a lame question but i'm new to this turbo business.
Justin.

As they say in the book, assembly is the reverse of dismantling, but slower cos you forgot where all the bits are
G'Day mate,
Assuming its a 7M-GTE CT26, the factory specs can be found here.

2-3mm sounds rather excessive mate.

lol, if they are a relatively standard spec, it may explain why my turbo blows smoke when the oil is rather hot lol, stupid turbos.
on another note just1n, my turbo when i bought it had 2 or 3 mm of side to side play. it works fine. but as i said, it seems to blow smoke on blips of the throttle when car is hot. esp when idleing.
im refusing to consider blow by, so it must be turbo smoke.
depending on your purpose, i might suggest a new turbo? ....

once or twice a day is enough shaft play![]()
2-3mm should make the impeller touch the housing. This will always show up as a dull area on the inside of the inducer.

12.44 @ 113 mph on 165 wide street tyres
210rwkw - not bad for a smelly 3TGTE running pump fuel.
i just pulled mine as far forward as it would and gave a twizzle. didnt hear any scrubbing. pushed it back as far as it would. didnt scrub. so decided it must be good![]()

Did you push it to the side and give it a turn? This is when it is most likely to touch the housing (and happens when closing the throttle in normal use).

dont yank on the shaft and see if it has side play, there only small shafts and bend fairly easily, i tested this on my old ct12a's one my mate did it on mine and had ridiclous play(but it was bad to start with, ceramic dust in the housing) so i tried on one that wasnt too bad then gave it a good wiggle side to side and it flogged out pretty quickly.
The problem is the turbo is interstate so I wont get to see it till after I have bought it.
It's a Highflowed CT26 off a Turbo A Supra which I had planned to use on my AW11 with a ST165 3SGTE in it. The guy i'm buying it off claims that it was rebuilt less than a year ago and less than 20,000kms ago by the previous owner, but there isn't a reciept to back this up.
The turbo is still on the car and the 2-3mm of shaft play was measured from where he took the air intake off the turbo.

Mate, 2-3 mill at the blades is too much. It’s not the best way the check the play but there also isn't 2-3mm between the blades and the housing. Try and get some close up pics of the turbo inlet and look for any scoring on the housing.
That said, without receipts for the rebuild etc it sounds a bit shady. Remember if the price is too god to be true, it probably is.![]()

When he said 2-3mm I think that was total form one side to the other. So it would be 1-1.5mm either side from centre.
i doubt its that much. sometimes it feels alot but it isnt really.
the question is, why not buy something you can inspect? i dont think its worth the risk...

well the manual says to replace teh turbo when it has 0.18mm of radial play
the seller says anything bigger than that, you can safely assume that the bearing is well used ... and 2-3mm of total movement =totally rooted.
GIven that the clearance between housing and blades is about 1mm you have some compelling maths that suggest a very worn turbo.
