oh, ur gonnna cop a good beating for this one, probly shoulda searched, it almost always comes down to ones personal preferance, some people like river like the 18rg more other like the 2tg more, i find (from what ive read) that the 18rg is mre powerful, from factory some stronger too, the 18rg is 145hp thats the best one, and the 2tg is like 124hp people have turboed both. end of the day comes down to what u wanna do with it, how much power, and money you have, and want, and also parts will prob be harder to find for a 2tg i recon.

    hope this helped

Theres not gonna be much difference in terms of reliability and easiness to get parts.
18rg mite be a tad quicker...but its not like they're awesomely fast anyway....
reckon u shud go by personal preference of the 22 and 23 style.

Oh ok. All i was going to say is whether you had a ra or ta which engine would be easyer to put in but you already know that so its all good...

    Cheers, Craig...

Both are equally reliable and equally difficult to get parts for.

You're better off with the RA23/18R-G option because (a) good RA23's are easier to find than good TA22's and (b) the 18R-G is obviously bigger therefore will have more power at any given level of development.

There was a thread very recently in the tech section which addressed some ideas of forced induction on an 18RG..

These guys would have a better idea than me but if you want a old turbo celica wouldnt you be better off going with say a ra23 with a 1GGTE? I would think a 1GGTE would have more potential for power than a turbo 18RG. And from what iv heard there not that hard to get into an ra23 plus parts would be easyer to get...

It will be alot easier to find a turbo manifold for a 2T-G being you can just use the 3T-GTE manifold...

    Or just go a TA22 with a 3T-GTE...

    Thanks guys,

i am not looking for huge power figures, just about 120rwk-150rwk. I don't mind going either turbo or NA. is it posible to get that power out of an na engine?? still being drivable??

    Possible? Yes. Drivable? Not really.

For that sort of power a turbo engine is the way to go, but turbocharging an 18R-G or 2T-G is far from the most cost-effective route. Possibilities to consider are a 4A-GZE in a TA22 or a 1G-GTE in an RA23. Both will give you the power you want in near-stock form, will be drivable economical and reliable, and cheaper to boot.

reinforcing what everyone has said thus far, both of these engines are bad platforms but there are far better ones to start with, like the 4agze and 3sgte or 1ggte, although those require a bit more work in terms of installation/conversion, they will be far more reliable and alot cheaper on the pocket. they are also newer which means there are still going to be parts readily available.

but if ya want HEAPS of aftermarket parts go an SR20DET they are not only tough engines also fairly cheap and every one knows where to get parts for em. that being said the conversion requires tunnel mods as well as a few other bits n peices

a bored stroked 2T will produce the most power,
    but i would look at a 1GGZE in a RA23,

I think what is more important is deciding on a TA22 or a RA23, and i dont see why anyone would prefer a RA23 except they are more common/less old.
