Yep exhaust is fine. Its all brand new. Flows freely

And the compression is all good too.

Thanks for the suggestions I'm sure someone soon will say "Check XYZ" and the light bulb will come on

Drop the unifilters off, and go for a run.
I watched a mates car pick up some 15kw/hp i can't remember which it was.
Standing next to the dyno, we saw each of the little socks getting sucked down onto the trumpets but not inside the trumpet as it had the the springs that hold the shape.
It still runs the sock type filters, but they now sit a lot higher up on the trumpet.

Good luck, how about some pics of the clubman

The spanner in my avatar is actually a 16mm, that's why it's still new

one thing i can think of that has not been mentioned would be to check the vvt to see if it is constantly on, maybe a hot or ground wire is shorting somewhere making the vvt active as soon as you turn the key.

connect a CEL light and check for fault codes. Check the TPS adjustment and wiring. Being a blacktop you can also connect a scantool and monitor the ignition advance, knock etc while you're driving.

I think 30psi 4agte's point was to check if TDC on the pulley actually lines up with the real TDC.

There are occasionally times where a key/keyway gets damaged, and the crank pulleys (timing belt and balancer) don't match the actual piston TDC.

Also, just to be safe, does that motor have a single pin/hole to line up when installing the exhaust cam pulley?
For example, some 3sgte engines have multiple holes that result in a different relationship between the pulley and the cam.

Having said all that, absolute first step is to check DTCs.

yeah double check tdc is real, however the dimple on the cam drive pulley is a good indicator, check that against the drive belt pulley marks.

the problem isnt to do with VVT, its just not possible for it to go that far out
faulty map sensor or the like could be a good possibility

3SGTE: Yep I've had the crankshaft pulley off with the timing covers off and checked the true TDCs.. The key and keyway is not damaged at all. The exhaust cam is one with only one notch for the pin, so you can't get it wrong. I took that off as well to triple check

I'll be checking the CEL codes in the next couple of days. The car is stored about 10km from where I live so its easier to go work on it at lunchtimes as its near work.

Thanks for your suggestions all... its greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I think I've repped everyone that has helped.. if I've missed you, please PM me.

Just for giggles, are you running an oil pressure gauge?
If the oil pressure is not good, the VVT will not work well at all.

Two times when I changed the oil on my 20V blacktop, I went to drive away only to encounter a huge stumble. Presumably due to air in the actuator/oiling system.

Any mods to the oil pickup/oilpan to get it into the car?

I haven't got a gauge, but the oil warning light is hooked up the the dash and its never flashed on or anything. I might hook one up and see when I fit the oil cooler I bought.

No mods to the sump/pickup at all.
