Tracked the leak down to that small 90deg hose beneath the thermostat housing, the pipe felt like a piece of sponge and has a huge tear/bulge in it. Its a prick to get to but those spring hose clamps make it twice as hard.

Off topic but im fairly certain that no 1jz powered x80 series car came with a manual. It seems stupid i know but thats what toyota did. I can get a manual jza70 halfcut from cvap which is only an hour away if i wanted to anyway

I dont know if anyone else notices how thirsty their 7mgtes are but her car has always sucked the juice even though its driven very sedately. The reliability ive had with my 1jz and the fuel economy would be the main reasons id do the swap. The cons are insurance/engineering and the fact that i know eldar probably speaks from experience lol.

as i said, the x81 chasers did come manual.

they are very rare now though

i beleive they came with the r154 too

Very apt description ................ I replaced this hose twice in 3 years, plus 2 head gaskets due to overheating in my 7MGE MX83 and never again. I want nothing to do with 5, 6 or 7M engines, I went 1UZ and haven't looked back.

How could toyota have let the head gasket abuse go on for literally decades? 5Ms even had hg problems didnt they?
Thank god for nissan who forced toyota to develop the 1jz lol

I recon she should get rid of the fuckin thing and just buy a jza but shes attached to it haha

The JZX81 never came as a manual, there are some around in Japan but they have all been converted to manual.

The GX81 GT did but being a 1ggte it was backed by a W58

If you search Mr Google, there is evidence that the Supra brigade in USA had a partition with over 30000 signatures making demands on Toyota to make a specifically reworked head gasket for 5, 6 & 7MGE and MGTE engines so as to correct the head gasket problem and they were told by Toyota engineers, they didn't know of any head gasket problems with these engines and therefore a new head gasket was not warranted.

Maybe the profit from the sale of gasket sets was suitably high enough that it meant Toyota wasn't about to give it up.
