if my example of 1j tuffness isnt enough i dont know what is
194000 k engine, 35 psi through it and nitrous, still perfect, no leaks no problems, stock as it left the factory.
buy a $400 engine, or just to the seals and leave it at that.
unless it is totally rooted, the rings/pistons should last 200,000km.. in normal driving...
so really it is unlikely they are rooted and you need to rebore/rehone.
checking the bore (heck, even just by eye looking for hone marks) should be enough..
oil dribbled into the chambers (after lubing the bearings) should be enough to get it to seal for compression check...
then again.. just do what you were going to do anyway... even if it blows smoke, it won't leak

fwiw: Wilbo's 1JZ was an import, all he did was swap the sump, stick new seals stuck in it and make it look clean ... it fired up without issue and has happily coped with lots of abuse and general usage.
Only issue has been the rear zorst turbine falling apart - otherwise does good skids and continues to do so.
Yeah, but his is slower than a 7MOriginally Posted by thechuckster

My 2JZ was an import as well with an alleged 80,000 on the odometer. I didn't even replace any seals on mine and 4 years later it's still good - valve stem seals are slightly smokey, that's it. I wouldn't even consider a rebuild if something let go, not when you can get another bottom end for well under a grand, and of course 1JZ is cheaper again.

Alright i'm glad i had enough support on here to talk me into the cheaper option. (which was my initial thoughts)
I think my 'mate' the mechanic is trying to squeeze what $$$ he can out of me. I'm going to pay him some beer for storing the engine for the last 6 months and i'll do up all the seals etc at home. New water pump, oil pump and seals should do her. I'm not aiming for eleventybillion horsepower, just a reliable 400ish at the crank. It's just a daily driver!
The oil pump is built into the front of the engine....it is a bitch to get to, I'd leave itOriginally Posted by Rorge
ps matt, me thinks I is more jewish than you....
pps get back to me in a few months (6-8?) and I'll have a stab at ur old 7m I think...
Cheers

the engine is just a long motor at the moment with no ancillaries, so i think i will do the oil pump just so i know i don't have to mess with it again!
