Default Who to use in Brisbane to freshen up my spare 1jz

Hey guys i've got a 1jz in my MA61 but it's very very sick so i'm just putting around in it. I've got a spare sitting at home that just needs a freshen up, ie all seals etc (i was hoping to avoid HG)

Is there anyone you guys recommend as the best person for this job?

I'm quite mechanically minded myself, (i've done alot of engine work on Subaru's) and don't really mind getting my hands dirty if it's simple enough. Should i do it myself or outsource to someone.

If it's just seals, do it yourself mate, piece of cake out of an engine bay.

Well i've just decided to give it a full freshen up, ie run a whole rebuild kit through it minus pistons. So rings, bearings, gaskets seals etc. Any idea what sorta costs i'll be looking at for such a kit?

Why not just buy another engine? About the only thing I'd bother changing on a 1JZ would be the water pump. They are cheap enough to just replace.

well if i do everything on this new one then i know it's ready to go and it won't have ANY problems, if i buy a second handy (like this one is) then there could be some sort of hidden issue...?

Sure don't! But that's when i use my friends! hehe

Ok basically this engine i was going to freshen up is an import that has sat for at least 2 years without being run, hence my want to tidy it up first. Should i be bothering to pull off the head and doing the rings or should i just replace all the seals and water pump oil pump etc and hope for the best...?

Do you know how many km it's done? With a 1J if it's reasonably low km I'd just worry about the seals

Why not simply do the rear main seal, maybe the waterpump / timing belt and then hope for the best.

every import engine has low kms

maybe get borescope, check the bore condition, do a leak down test/compression test to check rings...

if it has been sitting 2 years, def do seals and such, at least you know it won't leak

plastigage the bearings perhaps, and check for scoring, but unless it is rooted, they should be ok.

oh, and pre-lube everything (bearings, cam bearings buckets etc) when reassembling, treat it as a newly built engine..

Yeah i mean i'm happy to just change all the shit around it. My mate who's a mechanic is being a bit tight on it and reckons i should do everything. I doubt the compression test will be too accurate considering how long it has sat so i don't see the worth in that, boroscope sounds like it'd be a worthwhile thing.

I'd rather save the cash and just do the water pump etc. I'll talk it over with my buddy.

    jus rebuild it
hone, new bearings, new rings, new valve stem seals, new every other seal, new water and oil pumps, single turbo conversion.
id budget 2-3K doing the work yourself, and getting it machined by a reputable company. i would use jack brothers racing in underwood. they did all my 1g engine work, bloody quality, and good price for the reputation.
theres no point going about it all half cocked

Or, for the same money, buy 3 more and just replace them as you kill them

dont be silly, its that nerve racking unreasoned panic when you first turn the key on 3000 worth of parts and too many late nights labour that all us people live for

why do i still get that after 1200km? lol, bloody motor
