1JZ + slipping clutch - whats the fix

I've got a 1JZ + R154 in my MA61. The only mods to the engine is a set of new CT12a's.

It's only been running for about 2 weeks, and in the last few days it has started slipping when hitting high boost. I'm using the clutch and pressure plate that I got with the R154 - seemed to be in pretty good condition.

The car is purely a daily driver - so I'd like with a replacement that I can drive around the city.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a replacement clutch system? One mechanic I've spoken to has quoted $700 for a ceramic 5 puck.

I'd probably steer away from ceramics, they are a bit of a 'halfway' kind of solution, if you aren't intending to go too much further over the top, i'd just get a heavy duty full face organic..

jim berry / raceclutch in brisvegas are always an excellent place to get clutches from.. you could probably even ask them for advice.. they seem to know their stuff..

If it was me.. i'd go a sprung centre 5-6puck brass button... but thats because im a C*NT to cars.. its also why there's an auto behind my 1j

and if you treat it a little rough it will be fuxed again in 3 months

speak to extreme clutch about their 1JZ clutch packages something with around 1500-1600kg on the pressure plate and a 9 puck ceramic sprung centre should do the job nicely and still be easy to drive...

but if it was me...id be getting an OS or Ogura twinplate...there is nothing like them

If you aren't planning much more power then the stock setup should be more than capable!

I'd suggest a full face organic and the pressure plate modified for slightly more clamp....did you measure the clutch plate rivet depth before putting it in (to see how worn it was...)?

Another option is that it suffered oil contamination at some stage in its life...

Regardless if you aren't going for massive power I'd try and stay will a full face organic clutch (and I see no reason you can't with your current power level).

Also I've dealt jim berry / raceclutch and did find him to be very good (my pick of the Brisbane places...)

ceramic friction materials require much higher clamping forces than others, they will also f*ck out your flywheel much faster - because they are hard.. really really hard.. if you go to a super heavy pressure plate you might have issues with flexing (and eventually ripping) the firewall.. (this is an issue in a few cars, mostly non-toyota)

there's a reason that organics are still used everywhere, they are still a really good option unless you are going UBER power..

Yep, my 5-puck ceramic clutch wore the flywheel down quite a lot in the 2 years I had it in, even though I was always careful not to slip the clutch any more than I had to. I also blame it for my 4 gearbox failures; they all happened after I upgraded the clutch from a full-face organic!

My Celica has a stock clutch and it cops way more abuse than the Supra ever has. In 10 years it's only suffered one gearbox failure, and that was only because of a dud end seal which spat the oil out.

Whatever you do, do not go a HKS Twin Plate brass button clutch. Its still in my gearbox, and i fscken hate the bastard of a thing. I hate it. It much hatred. As others have said, possibly an OS Giken job (Otomoto?)

According to Jim Berry who does have an excellent reputation as a racing clutch specialist the HKS twin plate is the best japanese twin plate but not as good as Sachs

Jim also said that any clutch can behave badly for many reasons ie lubricant contamination,simply not being set up properly etc etc.I listened to him for close to an hour and learnt that clutches are really a specialised area and its very easy to spend money on the wrong one.

Any second hand twin plate etc needs to be checked over by an expert before purchase.

The clutch i took to Jim is an unsprung metal composite 6 puck twin plate pull clutch for R154 and cost approx $250 to have Jim check it for wear and deflection,straighten if necessary and set up ready to go in.

I guess the point im trying to make is that a good clutch guy will need a lot of specific info about power level,driving style and intended usage to guide you into the right combo.Any advice on what clutch to use without being asked these questions should be disregarded if your needs are at all out of the ordinary.
