Recommend me a turbo - 2JZGTE

Engine is a 2JZGTE. Can't run the standard turbos because of clearance issues. You beaut $199 ebay manifold works a treat. Obviously happy to fab up an adaptor plate to suit. Running aftermarket ECU.

I'm after maybe a little more power than standard but not too much more. Mainly for daily driver with occasional track excursions. R154 box and the whole lot into a ute.

Now, what do people use for intercooler piping - mild steel, ali, stainless? Pros/cons? Anybody have some online shops for those funky colored silicone bend thingos?

Anybody using these funky $199 ebay intercoolers? Any good or would I be better off sacrificing the money to Satan?

The Ebay manifolds are T4 flanged, so you''ll be looking at something like a GT40R minimum. Which is getting quite large.

If you want a stock type power curve, but with more top end. the GT35R with 1.06 rear housing has been proven and tested by heaps of people.

As for the ebay intercoolers, they work, thats about all i can say really.

Exactly the same manifold as the one I bought, same price too. They look pretty decent but I haven't actually tried mine yet. Dennis just got his single-turbo contraption up and running and he has the same manifold as well, so keep an eye on his progress I guess.

As for turbo, GT35R if the way to go for a streeter - plenty of mid-range response and a good top end. I've got my eye on this hybrid one with a T4 flange:

EDIT: I have one of those coolers too. For the money you really can't go wrong and I'm very happy with mine. Look at one up close and it's hard to fault them; I'm sure they're not as good as the mega-dollar Jap coolers but at moderate power levels it's going to make SFA difference.

Exactly Norbie, I figured at $200, you can't really go wrong.

I have been reading Dennis' thread on PF. Looks the goods there.

GT35 - does it run internal or external wastegate? If external are people just cutting off the wastegate pipe on the mani and sealing it? Does it come with roller or conventional bearings? Water cooling? Retail on one of those suckers?

GT35R comes in both flavours now. Ball bearing, water cooled turbo. Non wastegated setups come in 0.63, 0.82 and 1.06 rear housings. While the internal gate comes with the 1.06 housing (as found on XR6T's)

Retail new if you know where to look is $1800ish. Second hand cheaper again (i picked mine up for $1200 to my door)

Well sounds like just the turbo for me then. Just after standard with a bit more oomph. Price bracket is the goods too.

As for intercooler piping, what are you guys using? What did you do to clean up the welding dags on the inside? Clean butt join and hope for best? I am a retard welder so I'm figuring mild steel might be the go?

last time i did intercooler piping, i just use heaps of straight pipe and silicon hose with lots of hose clamps. hahaha

I use stainless pipe, mostly because a friend welds stainless for a living and can TIG it up for me at work. If you're doing it yourself I guess mild would be a better option.

I got a shop to make my cooler piping, it's all one piece and section welded. The only problem you really need to worry about with mild steel is rusting, however if you keep the outside painted it should be alright, and generally the inside will get a fine coat of oil so should stop rust as well.

Mild + HPC is the ultimate, a bit spendy though.

I am a tight arse so I made mine out of mild steel...got a 2.5" donut, and a length of 2.5" straight and some time with a drop saw, and a mig welder got it tacked in place....

I wanted it to look a bit better than MIG welding so I gave it to Norbies welding mate to TIG

Droped them in to get powder coated today...$50 (not as bling as HPC but my wallet likes me more I think....)

And yeah just plain mild steel will rust a lot (I had them unpainted on the car for about 8months?)...the insides are brand new however.

i would recommend external gate, i dont think the internal gate ones control boost very well.

my suggestion would be same turbo 35/40 with 1.06 rear housing, external gate option, 45mm pual stanek wastegate, as they can be rebuilt and he warrants them for life, eboost 2 so you can control when the wastegate opens.

For IC piping I always use mild tube and bends. Cut it up then TIG weld it.

Relatively cheap, I'm not worried about looks (though once painted it looks fine) and I can do it all at home.
