Default ah crap, any gearbox-knowledgables? :)

    Hellos!

Well I just took delivery of my GT4 ('91 ST185), private sale, and seem to be having a bit of a funny with the gearbox. When i test drove it, it seemed pretty ok, however i noticed on the way home 4th gear was extremely temperamental. If I was very careful with it (ie shift up VERY slowly, dont shift down through it) it was fine, however if i attempted to shift down into fourth, or shift at a fairly normal speed, it would grind a bit, and, on upshift, slip into gear, on downshift, sometimes slip into gear and sometimes just not go (ie grind), even if i let go of clutch in neutral and re-depressed it. Fourth is the only gear that does this, so i dont believe it is a clutch related issue, or an issue with how i am using the clutch.

Does this sound like a synchro issue to you guys? is it difficult/expensive to fix? am I better off going out and getting a good 205 box and swapping them? is this expensive too? or is my best option to just be light on fourth until i lose the gear all together, and then pretend i have a 4 speed turbo mustang? lol any other opinions on what it may be?

    Thanks kindly for any assistance

    JP

    Hi,

Yes, it sounds like the synchro on 4th gear is on the way out.

Dunno about cost, but I'm sure that one of our learned brethren will pipe in and enlighten you.

    From my GT4 Experience.

Syncrhos and gearboxes are problems with the E15* series used in the GT4's. Usually its only the 2nd to 3rd syncrho which plays silly buggers. Never heard of 4th grinding.

Change gearbox fluid first. Use some proper gear oil (non lsd - GL4 or GL5). Or at a pinch, you can use ATF fluid. (which i did for both my old shagged gearbox, and my new one).

Other thing which could be causing is the clutch isn't disengaging all the way.

Thanks for those tips the previous owner advised me he'd just re-done the gearbox fluids, but ill re-do them ASAP.

If its the clutch, wouldnt it happen on all gears? There's considerable length (maybe a good 2 inches?) between engage point and the floor, and it's a pretty punchy engagement (new clutch).. dunno if its still a possibility considering that? I'll check the travel distances, air in the lines etc and see how i go

in the meantime, ill just avoid/be careful with 4th lol

    Hi,

If the clutch had a problem it would affect all gears.

While you can try and put in a high quality oil, it will only be a crude extemporisation. If there's worn components in the gearbox there is no oil in the world that will magically fix it. It may mask the problem for a while, or make it go into gear a little easier - but, in the end, the only permanent and proper fix will be to replace the worn components.

1 other thing to check make sure your clutch pedal box isnt cracked i have seen 8 cracked ones in the last 2 years if its broken u can get a genuine 1 for $80 or a second hand 1 from many importers for $150
I know u are all gana say but it doesnt happin in the other gears but if the synchros are worn then maybe it has caused the problem fix the cause and the resault
    my 2 cents worth

i've had a problem similar to this with third gear, we went to DIY auto and the guy there said to put some auto gearbox oil in in then top of with the manual oil.
    Fixed it straight away!
Apparently this is a common problem with the mitsubishi boxes.

I'd just check with some of the more toyota-knowledgable people here before trying it on your car
