Its possible, hell you can even run a W40
But its going to be a big ask IMHO to run a w50 behind a gte.
It'd be much better just finding a w57/8 and corresponding bellhousing. You'd probably end up doing this later anyway.

    If you're desperate, i've got an M - W50 bellhousing i could sell.

    Cheers

Yep, bellhousings are around to make it happen.

Lots of old V8 people run W50's without too many dramas so it will prbly be fine...

Phil I think someone I know was after a M-W50 bellhousing so if payney8 doesn't want it PM me

    Cheers

    Been done.

Chat to secoh on PF - he blew up three of them in a 7MGTE MS112 Crown. Typically, boosting up in 5th gear kabooom. He just went R154 in the end.

That said, guy down here ran a boosted 7MGTE on LPG with locked diff in a MkII - 12 second quarter - with a W50. Never had an issue.

    W58 is fine.

What about a W55?? find an RT142 corona with a manual, and raid the box from that. You should be able to find the rona for about $500, and sell the motor to somebody after EFI in their hilux/landcruiser for $500+. Then if you get the Avante model, the rear discs will sell for about $200. Suddenly you have just got a free gearbox.

A good friend of mine regularly drag raced and participated in street shenanigans with a W40... although it was in a light car he was launching at 8000rpm on slicks on the bottle, so they're certainly not a weak box.... but behind a torquey 7m you're just asking for trouble.

Besides, $200 for a W50? Consider yourself raped.

W40's are quite stout and will survive behind a 7M-GTE no worries, but the tacked-on 5th gear in the W50 is weak - so as GT suggested you'll probably blow it up as soon as you use 5th gear. W55/7/8 is a much better option.

my W58 is starting to suffer behind my 7MGTE, however most of the damage occured when the car was borrowed

Any box will survive if the box is in good order and the driver is gentle. Any box will break if the box is crusty and the driver is heavy-fisted/footed. Work out where you fit into this balance.

Heck, even a K50 would live if driven really quietly...

mrshin - a 7M will simply tear the teeth off the gear at WOT... it's unreasonable to suggest that the box will be ok 'on the condition that you don't accelerate'... ridiculous to think that someone with a turbo engine wouldn't at some point apply full throttle.

I think that what he was getting at is that gearboxes arent generally made to stand up to harsh punishment. Heck, even a Getrag box will die if abused for long periods. But his point is that if ya granny were driving to bingo and back, then she would not have problems using a K50 box.

Oh, I was never suggesting it would be a good idea at all - I'd certainly never do it! If it's quite possible to break R154's behind a 7M, then why would you fit something weaker?
