air sanders

found some air sanders on ebay. need to rub back car and dont want to spend lots on air sander as i wont need it after this project. do i use orbital or the flat looking bastard. no idea! help?

Orbital, it will eliminate edges, flat sander or non orbital no good

be careful with an orbital, if you use it the slightest bit too heavy handed. itll leave swirl marks that will never come out. Do it by hand or use something like a makita palm sander, but even with that u need to be careful.

Be surprised or not, its not much slower to do it by hand, rope a couple of mates into helping you.

If you are talking random orbital, it is almost impossible to get swirl marks

Mate it depends on the orbit,usially they are 2.5 - 5mm, im talking about palm sanders here.Dont go forced rotation sanders,which you will often find in 6-8" pads thats only for ship dismantlers etc Palm sanders wont leave any marks but just make sure you get the velcro backing pad and one preferably with a 5mm soft backing pad.

The other thing is check the CFM of the sander if its above 3 cfm and if you only have a little compressor it wont run it. High flow fittings and 1/2" lines are your friends.

Put up a link of the ebay one your thinking of and ill let you know if its worth it.Oh I used to work for Chicago Pneumatic air tools,thats why im crapping on like I know what im talking about

I've used mainly 6", both stick on and velro, never had an issue with swirls I could see how you could get swirl marks but that would be coz your sander is not running enough pressure and slowing down your sander or pushing way to hard on the panel

I'd go with velcro over stick on for sure as stick ons are a bitch to change

velcro and a GOOD compressor. without a half decent compressor you will get swirl marks and it will as slow as sanding it by hand.

thanks everyone. got a 2hp comp. dont think that will be an issue. dont now how to link .sorry will learn that. i was told to use 240 grit and take of a couple of layers. is this wright. not going back to bare metal. the sander is in ebay under air sander. not hard to find.

i think is 5inch orbital palm sander. its about $50 dollars. rubber mounted pads. cheers

love using these sanders & not to heavey either so it's easy with the work you can do around the body .

Nearly every compressor I see on the market is rated 2hp ,even if it is a $100 or $1000 compressor, you might wanna find out what "cfm" it is rated at because "hp" dosent mean alot with compressors, cfm (Cubic Feet per Minute, i think) is what counts

My home compressor is 15cfm it does the job with my air tools and sprayguns but if I had anything lower than 12cfm it would be useless to me

That's my personal experience anyway, hope it helps

As for using 240 grit, that all depends on what sort of primer you plan on using, the quality of your old paint etc, if you go into a paint supply shop just ask them how to go about it and they are usually willing to give good advise as most places ive been to the people behind the counter are qualified painters.

Took my whole bonnet back to metal and no swirl marks. Recommended to anyone wanting to avoid elbow strain.

I've also used it with buffing pads to bring cars back to deep shine using Meguiar's Swirl Remover and Deep Gloss Shine products.
