Default 1G 1GGTE Belts & Strange clicking metal noise *NOW WITH SOUND CLIP* help me out guys

    Heya Ladies -

i have been searching far and wide , over the hills and far away

forums.toymods.org.au has LOOOAAADDDSSSS of info on parts for the 1G engine so much info my brain almost poped.

    but ,

there is not any info at all on the actual belts.

so it would be sweet if anyone has any idea on what the belt numbers are for

    alt, water pump and aircon

and also while we're on the subject my 1G has been making a noise recently after mattae86 and i installed the boost controller with the pin all the way out. we did 3 short 400M runs at 18 psi . the car did shudder a few times then we put it back to stock and did some more runs and slowly increased it to 11-12psi , which its on at the moment with all stock gear . and its fine

at the end of the day i started the car up after giving it a bit of a rest , and i started hearing this taka taka taka taka taka taka faint noise that i hadnt heard before.

at first i thought .. " oh thats just the fan tapping slightly on the radiator guard" but obviously the radiator guard hadnt been touched so it wasnt that.

On closer inspection the noise is coming from around the 2nd cyl back from the front. well in that area.

it sounds similar to the injector noise , but slightly louder and metally.. if u know what i mean.

as far as the car goes, ive recently changed the oil / sparkplugs thinking that it may repair the noise , no luck, but as far as the car driving condition goes , its smoother and better than it ever has been .. but that noise is a worry ..

can anyone tell me what could be the issue.?

    cheers

    -John

The numbers are on the belts. Just read them off, and get a parts store to match them.

When you say shudder, was it a subtle thing, or a "OMFG I broke it" nature of the boost cut?

Or is the shudder when you come off boost and let the car coast back down.

Both engines in the sprinter have this issue.

The metallic tapping could be a main or rod bearing starting to go.

A stock 1G generally hits "boost cut" (AFM Maxing out) at around 1 bar (14-15psi) and will cause the feeling of some one turning off the engine then turning it on again mid thrash.

nah , it was like as if i was going over those lines they have on the sides of the roads in the eastern states .. bumpy line things .. we dont have them in WA .. but thats what it felt like ..

also i might ad ,, that i wasnt gaining speed once the vibration started.. also it was not the whole car . mainly the dash + steering wheel + windows...

Id say fuel cut after the MAF sensor maxed out like you say Lambo is the shudder.

Do 1G's have hydraulic tappets? Mighta rooted one. Thats the most "injector like" noise i can suggest.

Thats fuel going; on - off - on - off - on - off - on - off - till you wake up to yourself and stop hurting your baby .

Sorry, that sounded a bit rude.

The fuel gets cut right at a threshold. As soon as it is cut, air flow will fall under the threshold again and fuel will come back.

You can repeat this cycle till your engine blows, but you usually get the hint and back off.

Course we do. As for the other problem, I'll have a think about it, nothing springs to mind.

    RE; shudder thing;

i came home from the drags the other day to find the bolts holding the tailshaft to the diff flange had all came loose. strange sensation, similar to what you describe. its nothing to check over those things.

mine also has tap tap tap noise - still to confirm whether its just injectors or a bearng somewhere. ive got limited experience with some things

is the tap on all the time, or when its cold? What oil did you use to change it? I had this strange tapping noise, i doubt it is the same but you never know. Once i changed the oil to something of quality it went away. We put it to the oil not getting to the cams when cold. Just an idea

nope, 1G have a shim over bucket setup like 7mgX, 4age, etc et al

you can help lcate the source of the noise by temporarily disconnecting the spark plug for the cylinder in question. If it'd conrod related (big end worn or gudgeon pin flogged) then noise will stop or reduce significantly.

from my (limited) research, i think the timing belt part # is:
    Toyota 3568 79035 (same as GX81)

I have this aeging web page here that folks are welcome to email me revision for:

    cheers,

Ive got a GX81 that all belts need replacing. Its a 1GGZE tho and i dont know if the accessory belts differ on a 1GGTE.

I will dig up the belt numbers for you anyway but i can tell you that they will be impossible to match and the closest even available was not that close as i recall. I tried sourcing them through a mechanic & autobarn. You will probably find you need speak to belt suppliers/manufaturers directly to get real information.
