    Question Corolla EE80, GRRRR Wont start, Piece of @€${

    Hi

My sisters 1987 corolla EE80 1300, 12 valve is being a pain in my browneye.

It was running fine, started up nice as always, but then my sister went inside, and when she came back out the car had stopped. She said the car smelled like gas. After this the car been dead, but if u keep cranking it for a long time and give full throttle, it starts firing on one cylinder it sounds like, but not enough that its possible to get it running.

I changed sparkplugs, wires, cap and rotor, still nothing. i also looked into the carb and i can see it gets gas when pressing the pedal, i can also see the plugs get wet. The plugs have big nice sparks.

Still even it have spark and it gets gas, it just wont run.

i also tried using startspray, but even when i do this its dead, not even backfire or nothing.

i also looked at the timingbelt, but this seems to be fine, i havent checked the alignmentmarks, but the belt seems tight and nice so i cant really think its possible that it have jumped a tooth or more.

It has electronic ignition, and since the plugs have good sparks, i dont know if anything can be wrong with this, but isnt it usually either spark or no spark?

The carb im not sure about, but everything seems to be working good there too, choke piston is moving like its supposed to, and i cant see any vacum leaks or missing hoses or anything like that.

anyone have any good ideas about what is wrong with this car? i been trying to figure it out for a couple of days now, but i dont get anywhere on this problem, not even after i called toyota either.

Thanks in advance for ur help

You mentioned the plugs are wet.

If they are soaked in petrol, that would indicate flooding or a timing issue ie: The spark is there, just not at the right time.

How long was the car running for before it died?

I know you mentioned you looked at the timing belt, but just for elimination purposes, how old is the belt?

    Hi

    Thanks for ur answer

The plugs isnt really soaked, seems just a bit wet, but not very wet. its kind of hard to see tho, since the plugs are new now, gas isnt sticking much on the plugs, but if i look thru the plug holes, i can see the pistons are wet, but not a lot, just some spots of gas on them.

Im not sure how old the timing belt is since it doesnt say anything on it, but i twisted/turned it to have a look and it has no cracks between the "teeths", so i dont think its that old. only thing i noticed was that one side of the belt was a lot tighter than the other, left side was most loose, but this is normal isnt it?

Maybe someone else could confirm this for you, but the timing belt being loose on one side sounds like it may be a concern.

With ours, (3S-FE) the belt is tensioned by a spring loaded roller which is slightly wider than the belt. The belt is a tight fit across the entire width.

If it's anything like our camry, removing the top & bottom belt covers is a major pain!!

Going by what you've described though, timing seems like the most logical starting point.

Keep us posted on what you find.

    Hi

    Thanks for ur answers

I looked at the timingbelt again, good thing with this engine its very easy to remove the covers, but the belt is fine it seems like, tried to turn the engine a bit and then the belt was very tight and nice and both sides, so i think the timingbelt can be ruled out as a problem..

nut sure where else to start look now, i also had another good look at the carb and everything seems fine with that too.

something mysterious most have happened to this engine

sounds like it mite be flooding?

Does your carb have a float chamber window? Make sure the petrols in the middle of the glass. I had a problem with this.....

Also take the distributor cap off, and turn the motor until u reach the point where cylinder one is supposed to fire by looking at the rotor....and check if the timing mark is right.

Oh and wuts an EE80? never heard of that before....

    Hi again

after some days of bitchslapping this corolla, draining the carb, switching the choke solenoid, tried yet another pack of new sparkplugs, still nothing.

then by accident, i found out that if i remove the one hoose going from the topcover into the airfilterbox, the car started and ran fine, puttin the hoose back in placer, that car stopped. taking the hoose off, placing finger on the outlet for the house, the car stops imeadltly. the other hoose going from the topcover and to the manifoil has a red vent on it, this vent opens and close fine and everything is in order it seems like.

strangly enough, taking off that one hoose, revving the crap outa the car while placing the finger on the outlet, the car didnt stop, and now it actually runs like its supposed to even with the hoose connected to the airfilter.

what the heck can cause this strange problem?

its like the hoose running from the airfilter into the topcover actually sucked away all the needed air from the carb causing the car to not run, any good ideas of why this would happen? and any good tips on how to prevent it from happening again?

thanks in advance for all ur help
