would the ma 70 complete centre not just bolt into the hilux housing???
i am looking at buying a lsd cressida diff or a hilux 4wd g series and was hoping to bolt in the complete centre
Hi all
I am doing a conversion from hilux open diff to Supra 3.7:1 LSD.
Ok upon removal, one could say these diffs are nothing like each other! the pinion is different, the supra has bearings twice the size! the axle bearings are half the size on the hilux diff and carrier.
So heres what you have to do if you are putting the supra LSD and gearset in like i am.
PINION - USE HILUX FRONT AND REAR BEARINGS, LET THE DIFF SHOP DO THE CRUSH RING, ITS AN ODD SIZE.
LSD CENTRE - YOU HAVE TO MACHINE DOWN (APPROX 2.5MM ALL THE WAY AROUND) WHERE THE INSIDE OF THE AXLE BEARING GOES TO FIT A STOCK HILUX BEARING, THIS WAY THE SADDLES WILL FIT, IF YOU TRY TO USE SUPRA BEARINGS THEY WILL NOT FIT - TOO BIG!
AN ALTERNATIVE WAY TO DO THIS IS TO FIND A TAPERED ROLLER BEARING WITH THE SAME I.D AS THE SUPRA AND THE SAME O.D AS THE HILUX - BUT GOOD LUCK! NOT TO MENTION THOSE WOULD BE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN MACHINING!
MY ADVICE: buy stock hilux bearings and seals and send it to a diff shop giving the above instructions.
hope this helps all of you so that u dont do what i did....WTF when seeing the difference in the diffs! After some thought and measurements, i worked out it could be done tho, and not at a huge expense. i estimate probly $3-400ish, which is cheap really.
Now im only in the process of doing this myself, so i may not be able to answer all questions. just a note to all of you is that this isnt a "bolt in" conversion by any means.
thanks
Blake

for starters the ma70 is IRSOriginally Posted by ecotechilux
but no, i thought it would - the bearings etc are twice as big on the supra! which means they wont fit in the hilux bearing seats
oh thats why do you know if cressidas are irs also

Whats the story with Truetracs, do they need spacers and machining? I am soon to do what you are doing now. I have an IRS G series torsion complete diff and a live axle G series. Maybe im better off selling my torsion and getting a truetrac if its easier and cheaper?

it depends what the true trac is a replacement for - hilux or supra...Originally Posted by Pube

i was givin the advice that the gear sets change straight over. WRONG!!!!! just like you said robbo, now im fucking stuck with a hilux centre that i should have just left in cos now i dont have the $$ to get it put back together. im really fucking pissed to say the least!
anyone have a hilux centre in syd they want to part with open centre is more than fine and the taller the ratio the better.
Robbo, FWIW heres the thread from when I fitted a JZA70 G series torsen carrier into my RN41 diff.

You can get bearings for the carrier with the 50mm ID and the standard OD quite easily from a bearing shop, and theyre about the same price as the standard size.

dude the gearsets are a fine swap if you use the hilux sized bearings....the lsd needs to be machined around the axles tho as i said. then use the stock (new items) hilux bearings. take it to a diff shop with the info ive given you, itll make sense.Originally Posted by millsi
yeah its at the diff shop now. though its a $400 i dont really have. at least it will be all sorted once i get it back
its better to spend a bit of dosh and have it done properly mate, ive learnt thatOriginally Posted by millsi

Would this be the same with a Kaaz centre. I am correct to use a JZA70 one?
