    Default 96 camry problem

    Hey guys,

Got an issue with my parents camry. My dad was driving it the other day. Came out from the shops and it wouldn't start. Put metho in the fuel to get any water out. Reset the ecu. Didn't do anything. Towed it home.

next day, tested it to start and it was fine.

next day, started but didn't have any power and wouldn't get up the hill.
Feathering the throttle helped get it up the hill.

Had a look at it then and we have run a line from the FPR to a bottle to see if any fuel is being returned and nothing came out.

Checked for power on the terminals to the fuel pump and there is 9v(ish) on one terminal. I don't know if these have a fuel ecu but I bridged B+ and FP on diagnostics and this gave 12v on a different pin.

Turned the key to on and you can't hear the pump doing anything at all.

The pump was replaced about 6 months ago. I am thinking that the terminals may have come loose on the inside of the tank or something like that?

I would say to check the fuel filter but the fact that we can't hear the pump starting or doing anything changes that.

Anyone agree with me? Anything else to look at?

might or might not be relevant but the dizzy on them could be a hassle (4 cylinder 2200cc engines).. would cause the "sometimes it starts sometimes it won't" issue..

normally turning the key to ON, it only takes a second for the fuel pump to prime up the lines, then it stops until u start up so i'd doubt if hearing the pump is an issue or not.. considering the pump is new, either investigate it being installed incorrectly or has come to any sort of "failure" which i hope u've still got warranty on them, and sort the pump out, otherwise next bet is the dizzy (which also points to your symptoms of low power uphill etc etc)

Feathering the throttle to get it to run sounds to me like a air/fuel problem.
Test your fuel pump by cracking the fuel line, then turn the key on the pump should try to build up pressure.
If it feels good "DO IT" Unless it harms others.(or upsets the RTA)
Enjoy what you have To Day,cause you can't take it with you.

I had a no start problem on my 97 Camry, turned out to be a collapsed cell in the battery. Toyota ECU's like a minimum of something like 11v to 11.5v to work properly. I was getting 10.4v at the posts but 14.5v once the thing started.
    New battery later, problem solvered.
    Cheers,
    Mitch.

voltage is definitely good. Already checked that. Looks like the fuel pump is definitely gone.
