Interesting.. re: Rav4 final drive into E58 sounds promising..
The AE95 uses the same all-trac system and there's LSD rear diff that have the same numbers as AE86 LSD's

But.. if I understand correctly - final drive and rear-diff crown ring have to be kept the same size with Toyota's all-trac 4wd system

My all-trac gets thrashed daily... twisting to redline all the time.... PrettyCool... when does the E series transaxle get better??? Is it before 93? Just inquiring as to if the AE95 version was updated, or it waited till the AE115 version for improvement.

You will find the e58 has much better ratios in first and second. The 3.9 ratio will suit too I think. I used a rav4 final drive to get 4.5:1 gears. I was hoping to find 4.9:1 but it's very hard to decipher ratios off body tags

You say the box has issues with syncros at 250000. That's a reasonable life for syncros.

I can't say exactly when the AE95's were updated.. According to Terry's article:
"...3 piece synchro rings were introduced for 2nd and 3rd gears. This change began sometime in late 1992..."
(my wagons are 1989-1990)

250k is probably reasonable.. Terry's article suggests as low as 100k. Most of these wagons have reached the 250k mark and 350k is not uncommon.
One of mine is above 350k and had 2 owners prior and is the best of the lot! Another previously owned by a P-plater had just over 200K, drove it for 6 weeks then synchros died completely.. so it really depends on how they've been treated.

I got my gears out of a rav4 with a 2az. They are all e series with the narrow gears like a e58. I think it was out of a e253 box. Toyota couldn't give me the diff ratios even with a vin number.

if you have a specific question, toss it to me and I'll see if i can help. i try to update that article every 12 months to reflect what i learned that year. we can do several per month and then none for a month or so. most are GT4/MR2 ones, but dead RAV boxes are becomming common. terry

I've got 150k on mine now.... when cold... I can occasionally feel it easier to pull her out of first gear... but other then that I've no issues....

Is the RAV4 E series compatible to the AE95 version? Can we "pop" off the 2AZ bell in favor of an 4A bell? If so... it might be wise for me to acquire one if I can find a low mileage one.....

They are both E series so in theory the bell should swap. Camry boxes have been fitted to 4ages with a bell swap.

Rav4s do have some issues with fifth gear blowing. Makes it harder to find good secondhand ones
