    Default AE82 Seat - Disassembly (56k DIE)

    My AE92 seats are shot
Nickel was wrecking an AE82 twinky which I was lucky enough to grab the seats out of.

However on coming to fit the seats to the AE92, I found that they didn't fit

And found that the AE92 rails can't be *easily* removed from the 92 seats and swapped to the AE82 seats.

So given these needed a DARN good clean (and a small repair) I figured, lets take the seats apart.

For the benefit of those who have never seen inside a seat (like me) or how it fits together, heres how its done :

You need a pair of long nose pliers, 12mm socket and philips head screwdriver.
Note - have taken seats OUT of car to do this

    1. First up - off with the trims on the side of the seat. Note drivers side has a lower adjustment on the twinky (circlip underneathe) - and two screws. Remove all

2.Same for other side including lumbar thingo. Circlip under that. Two screws.

    3. Upend seat (the bottom squab is at the bottom of the pic)
Notice these little copper bastards. They need removing. Use longnose to basically spread them apart then roll them out of trim

    4. When done you're left with this

    5. Start rolling the seat cover upwards on the seat

    6. Remove headrest

    7. Lift up front of seat cover to reveal more of these (upper squab). Remove them

    8. Result

    9. Same with back of seat cover (upper squab)

    10. Result. You will be able to pull this mess off now (to a point)

    11. Remove the headrest channels from the upper squab
Pinch basically the bottom of the channel and lift it up. It takes a bit of practice

    12. FYi - this is what it looks like
Take note of the bottom - thats what u pinch together.

    13. Time to remove the foam bit. More of these things to remove (upper squab (back))

    14. And more (upper squab (back))

    15. When all removed, remove the foam bit.
Note the flap at the front of the foam bit - feed that thru under the seat lower part.

    Now for the bottom bit

    16. Undo the 12mm bolts holding the bottom squab to the frame

    17. Result

    18. Flimsy frame. VN Commodore ones are flimsier. Typical

    19. Bottom of bottom squab - remove more of the copper clips. Long nose pliers.

    20. When all copper clips removed, fold back the back part of the bottom squab. Remove the metal frame and put aside for later

    21. Now. Tricky bit.
The bottom squab (and the top one actually too) have copper clips holding the darn seat material to the foam cushion. Carefully remove these

    22. They are at the back of the bottom squab, and the two sides

    23. More

    24. Result. Note the metal rods. Remove them from the seat fabric. and put aside. Wash the seat covers good and proper.

    25. Complete

    Next installment will be assembly.
I'll be using the passenger side squabs and covers for the drivers side (funnily enough they are nowhere near as worn as the drivers side) and in VGC.
Things to bear in mind on disassembly ; the copper things are very sharp. These may be substituted later (during assembly) with small cable ties (I think these will work better, but, I am not a motor trimmer so I could be wrong)
Also if swapping covers remember that the passenger twinky has lumber adjustment and you will need to put a hole there for it if so.

    Hope you find this informational.

    Nickel, don't mate.

I can't see any major dramas other than the squabs being too big for the 92 seat frames, but, I'll cross that bridge when i get to it (not hard to fix)

They suit the car ; trim is perfect. Rails don't line up thats all. Out by a bit. No stress

    OK

The AE92 seat to disassemble - same gig. Not going to repeat the above - not worth it.

I'm waiting for the *good* covers to dry - then I'll put them on (prolly tommorrow at this stage

I can tell you the foams from the AE82 seats fit the AE92 frames no problem. All good there.

    Time for re-assembly

Tools required : long nose pliers, side cutters, cable ties
Instead of using the metal o-rings to attach the fabric back to the seat, i simply used cable ties. Will do the same job.

Here is the fabric after washing :

Heres the AE92 metal base in AE82 bottom squab

    1. Thread the metal rods into the seat cover. Put the material in the top part of the squab - (set the metal base aside for the meantime) You need to attach the metal robs in the seat cover to the foam base. I did this by way of cable tieing them together. Its tricky, but you need to do the front section of the squab first (don't tighten the cable ties all the way up on that section) then slackly tie the two side sections. When you're happy, tighten the front, then the two sides.

    Front

    Side

Side (see the little blue and yellow ties at either end)

    2. When all done, flip it over.

    3. Insert the metal base and cable tie thru the material (pickup the metal rod, so put the hole in material (use existing where u can) behind it to pick it up and tie to metal frame

    Finished result

    and

    Top squab to follow...

    OK

Tools required, long nose, side cutters, metal skewer (as in yes for kebabs)

    1. Clean AE92 seat frame of existing dust - dustpan brush works grouse. Get top squab and sit onto the AE92 frame.

    2. Cable tie the side "wings" to the spring. Yes the AE82 one was done this way.

    3. Where applicable - put hole for lumbar support. I used the passenger squab as it was less worn than the original drivers side. Funny that.

    4. Turn OEM seat cover inside out and insert metal rods

    and

    5. Turn OEM seat cover right way up, and slide onto seat only just a little

    6. Using the AE92 headrest guides (thats AE92 - AE82 were too long for the AE92 frame) insert into seat. They look like this

    7. Result

    8. Front of seat. See metal rod and holes where cable ties go thru

    9. See em better here. Sorry for blur

    10. Repeat with rear metal rod. Attach to upper spring (same as was originally - see the front ones coming thru?

    11. Result - material now taught

    12. Extend rest of material down seat squab

    13. Insert headrest and you're done

Aside from attaching the bottom part of the seat (I ran out of daylight, bugger end of daylight savings) thats pretty much well it (aside from attaching the lumbar support adjuster (make hole for that in cover too FYI)) and attach all the other good gear that goes with it. I'll put up a final pic result when its done.

I hope this helps someone in their cause. Total time to do this would be tops 3 hours (not including drying and washing of covers)
