    Default camry issues

    hi

wondering if anybody can help me got a sv21 camry... bought it like 3 months ago ran fine untill one night started to run bad ie. miss firing (pulsing). when u try to plant it it sorta losses power it doesnt keep accelerating it just rolls and afta u back off it back fires doesnt happen constantly just when the car feels like it. at other times it runs fine and pulls with no probs.

does the camry have a diagnostic mode? what are ur thoughts everyone.

it will have a diagnostic mode. To access it you'll have to bridge a couple of terminals in the fusebox (I think) next to the battery and then what the the codes that flash up on the little engine icon in the dash.

    There are a bunch of possibilities with this problem;
electrical - faulty dizzy, ecu, coil
    fuel delivery/quality

My sister had a similar issue with her old bluebird. Turned out to be some bad fuel. Add some metho to the fuel (around 10% of the total volume of petrol in the tank) to get rid of any water that may be present.

Which engine does if have? The carby one?

First thing's first check the condition of the spark plugs, if they're fine, check your timing, if that's fine check you have a good spark by earthing the spark plug leads to the strut towers.

More than likely it's going to be an ignition, or timing problem.. if carby fed, possibly underfueling but I'd check the ignition system first.

sv21 is injected, the almighty 3sfe.... as dale said, check the plugs, also id check the dizzy cap, my 3sgte had a tiny crack in it which i could not see and sometimes when id give it stick it would hesitate etc, replaced it and it was fine, fuel may also cause this problem.....

at the end of the day a set of plugs is 15 dollars and a cap isnt much more cant hurt doing a bit of a service anyway.

    good luck.

most std ecu's make the car run rich so i wouldnt worry about it to much. unless something is wrong and is causing it to be to rich, that would result in fouled plugs and would explain the hesitating but would do it all the time.....

i'm leaning more towards an ignition/electrical issue now. He states that the car backfires if he guns it during the power loss. Sounds like it loses spark or something and petrol is dumped into the motor unburnt --> exhaust --> backfire.

    I could be wrong though

a backfire will also result if the engine is to lean.....

    Fixed it yet mate ?

Our 96 vienta doing a similar thing.

First check would be leads and plugs - that's what is wrong with ours. Symptoms sound similar.

If you want the diagnostic codes for the 3S-FE MPFI, I can email them to you, and the way to check them.

I've done it on ours, pretty easy stuff.

    Cheers.
