im not sure how they are planning on "testing" the ecu other then swapping it for another unit.

reaslitically how often do they fail ? id be looking at something else in the system giving bogus data to the ECU way before i looked at the ecu itself.

Thats true Toof - although i just wanted to rule out the ecu, it might have a faulty ground or something...sorta just doing it for peace of mind. But im sure i'll have to find out what the real cause is...some sort of cross talk between wires somewhere on the car.

It does have the old '78 exsisting wires running behind the dash and then hooked into the 4age wiring loom (ignition related) - so the chances of some wires needing replacement or shielding are pretty likely.

so have you shorted out the T1 and E pins on the Diagnostics port and tried adjusting the dissy to get the correct timing?

What happens when you try that?
    ...... butt scratcher?!

Yep - thats how i originally tuned the car. If the car starts up running 5-10deg retarded, then i can't do this - as the car will stall. Its undriveable running retarded- it just stalls when you try to adjust the revs.

Another thing i've begun to notice (don't know if its got anything to do with it) but it seems to happen more often when the car is cold. If its been driving and then i turn it off and start it up 15min later, it normally works fine.

I finally got it solved!!! Turns out the pickups from the dizzy to the ecu were crossed over - so the ecu was getting mixed signals (that explains the random start timing)....now she's running fine every time.
