try and give it more of a sand and make sure there is no rust in there at all... the rust makes the hole smaller.. and the bearing is a tight fit.
an appropriate sized sockeyt/steel tube and hammer (maybe a smear of grease) should be enough to get in there, but be very sure you are hitting it in square... not gonna go in sideways at all (you already know that tho..) (and hit the outside of the bearing, not the inside)
can you measure both the hole and the spigot? bearing definitely the right item?
if it's a bitch to get in.. it's gonna be worse coming out
i vote there is still some corrosion, or decrease in diameter due to corrosion in there.... if you run a razor blade around inside it, can you feel anything?
