So what exactly is the problem? Why doesn't your LSD centre work?
hey guys,
So the story thus far. I have a g series diff under the rear of a 76 ra23 and it fits great. Problem is i have an open centre with ratio 4.1:1 and i also have an lsd centre (bar the ring/pinnion gear and housing). The plan was to put the lsd centre in the open centre housing with its ratio. I cant remember exactly who it was that told me at the time "yeah sure it works ive done it" but im going to track them down for some serious neg rep.
So the questions I have are:
-Is the solution, putting the ring and pinnion gear with the lsd centre in its corresponding lsd housing?
-Is there a better way of doing this?
-Do i sell the g series open centre, the 4 point lsd centre and just buy a torson one complete and in its housing from cvap?
Absolutely any help would be appreciated IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!!!
Cheers
Craig

There is nothing wrong with any of the parts, they just dont all fit together like somebody said they would. This is what i have of the lsd:
so its without the ring/pinnion and the housing, I then got the open centre (with the exact ratio that i wanted, for $200 mind you), i was assured i could put the above in the open centre but as i found out this arvo it doesnt fit in as i fouls where the axle bearing goes into the carrier/housing (which is definately g series as the axles fit and it plugs in).
Thanks for the reply, sorry if i didnt explain it the best previously

What was the LSD centre from? An IRS LSD centre will cause you issues - you will need a spacer ring.
Do you have the correct pinion bearing? There are at least 4 different ones.
Still not entirely clear what is fouling. Maybe explain yourself a little better - a labeled pic clearly outlining the problem would be very helpful.
If you're talking about the actual lsd carrier fouling the diff casting, see this thread: http://www.toymods.net/forums/showthread.php?p=81788
Many people say that G series gear can be swapped from IRS housings to non IRS without dramas, but this is not usually the case. As GT said, a spacer ring and different bearings may be required. I also had to machine my pinion down to clear the jza70 torsen carrier, but its all still going strong.

sorry guys

im pretty sure its a 4 point lsd from a hilux, so i asked the question can i just shove it in a hilux open centre and the reply i got was yes. I think most supra ie jza etc were torsons, but im not 100%. I wish it was just the spacer prob (i have read up on it before) cos id just get it machined
EDIT: Phil im goin lsd into non lsd centre, not irs lsd into lsd centre, but thanks, +rep

I went IRS Torsen into an RN41 non lsd centre.
If that bearing is too big, you can go to a bearing shop and ask for bearings with the new ID and the original OD.
sh*t yes pure insanity you are a god, i'll go first thing monday morning, whack it in together with my line locker and do a summernats test run!...
im joking!!! (Toymods does not condone...)
yeah the both the inner and outer diameter will be need to be changed
thanks heaps i didnt know you could do that (its a trivial thing too isnt it)
Provided there's a bearing that suits, should be easy. The bearings can be different width too.
the whole car is driving me insane at the moment, ive learnt in order to budget a mod, times what you think its gonna cost by 2, and by 10 for the time its gonna take
I have encounted this time and time again people saying this fit this and that works with that but it turns out to be so differen so I feel your frustration. I hope this all works out as ill be doing this mod soon too!

The % success rate of swapping IRS gears into live axel centres is not that high unless u use new gears , i have built dozens of these diffs and when using second hand gears from another centre most times it will result in some noise . However using new gears perfect

Ive been taking photo's and keeping a spreadsheet of the cost, I'll be sure to do a write up. One word of advice, I have bought all of these parts extremely cheap but in the long run it would have saved a lot of time and money if i had have just bought a trutrac and spent the time i was searching for cheap parts at work making money.
Craig
i dont mind the noise factor at all, it wont exactly be a daily driver. Just that the freaking bearing doesnt even fit in there by a long shot!
PURE INSANITY:
Totally confused, after reading your very well written solution i think it must be exactly what you did, as the bearings are the same dimensions. (Just wondering if you had the part numbers written down).
But then reading what dave wrote in your thread, the 4 point pinnion lsd is hilux.
The conclusion i have come to is:
open centre -------> lsd { will require a change of bearings if using the open centre housing no matter what }
g series irs lsd -------> g series live axle housing { will require a spacer and a bearing kit if the housing in non lsd }
I'll go to the bearing shop on monday (AWB bearings: specialise in bearing and power transmissions) and let you know how i go. Then with your permission i will add to your guide.
