Lightbulb RA23/28 remote fuel hatch release

    Hi all...

Has anyone setup a remote fuel hatch release for a RA23/28?
Any ideas on how it could be setup?
Obviously some a solenoid of some description would be required along with a latch/release.
Ive been trying to think of an easy reliable way of doing it for a few days now, but have come up with any ideas.

    [edit]

    Ok, its been done.

The Holden Berlina latch mech and Holden VL boot solenoid:

    Latch mech installed:

The hatch key hole filled and release spring:

Solenoid bolted in and hooked up to the latch mech:

    All done (minus paint obviously):

Ra23 doesnt have a latch mate, i think you are referring to the RA28 and only the 28 as a 23 has the same style cap as TA22

Can't the flap be spring loaded so it always wants to be open, then when you pull a cable you move a latch and it springs open?

Sounds like a good idea to me. You could also use a boot release solenoid from Jaycar rather than a cable.

That's what i've been thinking about trying out. Need to find a good switch to use on the original latch.

I'm in the process of doing this to my new old ra28, also boot latch as well and deaden the hatch lock. If you go to a pick-a-part place like jolly's or... pick-a-part, just rip the cable out of a mazda or something quick and easy bolt it in under your seat run the cable down the side and bolt it onto the flap. Mazda's are a great source for easy to scavange parts which can be retro-fitted just as easily.

I know this is strictly a 23/28 thread :-D, this may give you something else to look at

I am in the process of doing that to my RA40 hatch, where the drivers seat is bolted
the the floor, the front right bolt has another bolt thread right next to it, that can accomadate the boot/fuel release from an SA63.

it is a bit of an effort. what needs to be done then, is drill a hole next to the fuel filler pipe to put the little latch in, then run the cable down to the front and bolt in the lever.
old key lock on fuel door needs to be taken out and two peices of sheet metal welded
in (one behind and one to fill the hole) then take of the metal flap from the sa63 door that
grabs the little latch and weld that onto the ra40 door . One bit I havent found is a suitable
spring to push the door open ..

hope that might be some help

Have a look at the RT132 corona liftback, it came with a remote release fuel door. The door is in much the same spot as the RA28 and also nearly the same size.(almost identicle.
I have one in the yard at the moment and it would almost be a direct fit and a very easy conversion
    Cheers

One last point on the release, a piece of bent metal tacked in near the hinge which compresses when the lid is closed will spring the it open.

Keep in mind factory electric releases have a manual override (in the form of a short pull string, usually somewhere in the boot). Otherwise if the solenoid fails, you won't be able to open it.
