Here you go – the stereo deck into Ae10X dash installation guide! Please note these pics are of an AE102R 1994 RV Seca. Dash accesories may differ, but dash should be basically the same from 1994 until 1999 models…
Tools required – Phillips head screwdriver, spare fuses (just in case), wiring tools and connectors if doing wiring yourself.
Step 1. Open car up and disconnect battery. (Ensure you have original stereo pin code in case everything goes wrong and you need to re-install). Should have something like this…
Step2. Remove ashtray and then lower dash fascia, which is held in by these two screws…
And these two pull clips on the back, one under the cig lighter, one to left side of ashtray mounts…
Simply a matter of removing the two screws, then taking a firm hold in the ashtray hole near where the clips are, and pulling gently straight outwards… May have to unplug cig lighter to pull this completely away for access.
Step 3. The RV Seca models have the optional CD player in the lower section of the dash, others have differing pockets or blanking plates. They all mount on these brackets, held in by four screws located top and bottom. Dash pocket shown here is from an AE92 lower dash section, fits perfectly.
Toyota’s original optional CD player piggybacks wiring into back of cassette player. If this CD player is present, disconnect it from the brackets and leave it hanging loose until you can get to the back of the cassette deck to unplug the piggyback plug.
Step 4. The fascia around the stereo all comes off in one piece held in by clips, and pulls the air con switch loosely with it. Pull off the air vent control knobs, then grab the fascia with fingers underneath, thumbs in air control area. Pull gently out until you expose the rear of the hazard and rear demister switches, which must be unplugged at this point to fully remove the fascia…
All this comes out in one piece…
and leaves you with the stereo deck exposed, held in by brackets either side like these…
Step 5. Undo screws holding deck in and pull out carefully. Unplug wiring from rear of deck. Rear of deck has two separate plugs for wiring on one side, as well as the antenna and CD player input on the other, as shown here…

Step 6. Unless you know general wiring principles, or have a wiring diagram for this car and a multimeter, get an adapter loom for your stereo. Most auto shops will sell looms to adapt most cars to any stereo, comes in two parts – specific car to general plug, general plug to specific stereo. Use these and wiring is done in a minute, using the car’s original speakers. This fabulous idea was not around when I did this install, resulting in my usual two to three hours of hacking into the original loom, swearing, blowing fuses, swearing more, beer, fuses, swearing, etc until you have your new stereo’s plug wired into your harness. The adapter looms are worth it, especially if time is a concern.
Step 7 Install original stereo brackets onto new stereo. Newer stereo units have mounting holes to suit the brackets on different makes of newer cars. Some older cars (i.e. SV21 Camry) are more likely to need their brackets customized with new holes for this purpose.
Once mounted to your new deck, plug in your wiring and loosely reconnect your battery leads to test the unit’s operation before going to the effort of reinstalling everything else.
Then follow previous steps in reverse order to reinstall your dash surrounds, switches and inserts. The air con switch simply pushes back in. This car received an AE92 pocket in the lower dash fascia to fill the hole left by removing the Toyota standard CD player, but there is probably other AE10X series pockets that may be worth looking at. The AE102R brackets held this perfectly.
Last step – Properly connect and tighten battery terminals, and check to see if stereo, demister, hazards, cig lighter and air cond switches still work properly before presenting to owner of vehicle for appropriate compensation for services rendered…![]()
