    Hi all

couldn't do much today being hot and sat is worse (41 so i was told ) so no work on car till
7pm'ish what i found today was strange, one wire behind rightside kick panel went
nowhere was attached to something but found an intermittent pulse. 12v on off on off etc,
ignition was off, no lights on .

tested alternator, not much of a test, multi meter on the battery terminals was reading
13.5-13.8 while engine was running. By accident I discovered scrolling static interferance on TV with channel 7, so the car is emmiting RF interferance, supressor is new I put that
on while changing the coils on friday.

when the weather cools down a bit I'll probe the VR and Alt properly. this is turning into a real brain bender this one ....

    thanks all, ..
    cheers

    an update,
traced a fault to the gauges, Voltmeter and tacho not showing true. (seriously faulty)
I got the electronic ignition from a 21R-C did the converson and got the motor running so far
with out any issues. let the motor run for 10 mins then switched off, came back 10 minutes
later it started no problems. while running amperage and voltage checked out 40amp
    14 volt

So... i put another fuel/temp/oil cluster in started car, voila voltmeter reading true againt the multi-meter. then another speedo/ tacho was put in, car starts
so far fingers crossed every thing is ok, will go for a drive tommorrow and see what
    happens

    cheers :-)

    Hi people,
took car for a cruise for about 30 mins everything seems to be ok, had one question
though, does the ignition from a 21R-C/RA60 need a ballast resistor when its being
    run on an RA40/18R-G?

    edit: and condensor ....

    condensor on dizzi - no
noise-suppressiung condensor on coil - probably (can you pickup any AM radio stations?)
ballast resistor? how did it come from the wreckers?

Hi there, didnt think of checking for AM stations will do that after i send this..
coil, igniter and dizzy came from a wrecker as one complete assembly, this paticular wrecker
If parts are good, they take the complete assembly from one car and put them on the shelf. there wasn't any resistor with the coil.

Just did a scan of the AM band with engine on and didn't hear any noise on any stations
seems to be ok i think

looks very familar - my dizzi is using one of those sensors to provide timing for my megasquirt-n-spark-Extra ;-)

am confused as to why everyone mistrusts Toyota VR sensors - mine is going great.

anyway, back on topic, definetely no ballast resistor required.

when i dismantled the 16R dizzy I found the counterwieghts inside had seized closed
and the little springs rusty. so, alls good, now for the carby tune up.... fuel system check

    cheers.

edit, having resolved the electricals for now, fuel system definitly needs a thorough check

Finally got every thing sorted I had more then one fault at the same time.
so, If i summarize it all it would as follows
    1. cam timing retarded (fixed)
    2. Ign Timing retarded (fixed)
    3. gremlins in the electrical system (fixed)
    4. carbs needing rejetting. thats why plugs 2-4 are fowling up because they are more rich
than 1-3. (fixed as best can be for now)
    5. vac leak in balance tube. (fixed)

i was given a quote (OMG  ) for rejetting these solexs (because theres nowhere to do it here) and I think EFI is the way to go.

thanks to all for your posts and comments, you've been a great help cheers

think about talking to a motorbike shop about rejeting the carbs. they are probly more than qualified with multi carbs then your average mechanic-down-the-road.

they should also have a heat gun to compare exhaust header temperatures (see which is lean or rich).

our shop has jets in stock in a big range of sizes. there is 650cc singles out there so the jets should be big enough.
    hello

I've been doing a lot of ringing around (Adelaide) so far come up with nothing in the way of
spare parts or rebuild kits. I might have to give your shop a call I think.

    cheers

Buy a set of 45 side draft efi throttle bodies and cheap efi computes from efi hardware a bosch vl turbo pump piergburg lift pump surge tank and fit a cat and fuel restrictor and enjoy or another option is a pair of 45 webber side drafts with adaptor plate muck easier to get jets more tuneable. Call a friend of mine in Queensland called Simon on (07) 3341 6728. Another plac that may have a rebuild kit is IDB Automotive in 65 Butler Street Richmond Victoria 3121 Ph (03) 9428 5446. The specialise in Toyotas and advertise for Minki Solex rebuild kits. I hope this helps.

Hi there, i tried to + rep you for that but it appears i already did before, oh well.
I have been having a serious think, i'll give those places you mentioned a call and have a
chat to them and also look and the efi as well (efi is being given considerable thought
because I'm getting a bit sick of carbies), I've got some figures in my head and if the cost of
solving this problem goes over that then this car will be parted out. mostly because you get
to a point where enough is enough, also because of the amount of times this car has been
hit by vandals and thieves to a point were cops are sick of of me reporting it. anyway I think
thats that for this thread seems to be going off in a tangent one problem turns into another
    that goes of topic

    cheers :-D

    Hi Mundoolun

I spoke to IDB they didnt have anything on hand and they gave me the number for someone else that might have rebuild kits (which they did) keep this number handy:
B&M Fuel Systems 03 9428 0346. kits have been orderd and are on their way.

    Brett,
this is pretty sad, I phoned every number in the yellow pages in the carb section and rang
a few bike places as well and nobody was interested in doing anything, some of
the comments I got were rude from a customer relations point of view, I asked about
aftermarket EFI and copped the same attitude. I phoned one place that mundoolun mentioned
and got instant results and got results when asking about EFI as well.

    sorted matey

my last post ... was having a whinge session, little shitty's had a go at my car again the night before ....

    done done and done.

    cheers.
