    Default 4a questions

hey people, i have a 4a gze out of a front wheel drive corrola, i also have a rear wheel drive gearbox, aswell as a few other nick nacks, and i plan on putting these into a 62 morris 1000 ute for something a bit diferent. theres a few questions i have.

i dont know a lot about these motors, so i'll start simple. what do i change with the coolign system?? theres what seems to be the thermostat housing at the back of the head,

i dont want this as theres not enough room and i'll have to cut and mod the firewall as it is. is this just how it is with these motors? also the hose off the water pump (bottom rad hose) goes under the blower and manifold to the back

is there a rwd item that makes this go fowards? i assume i'll need a diferent pump? then theres a small water jacket looking thing up toward the front of the head, whats that?

i was also wondering what type my motor is, i have a few picks of it so you lot might be able to figure it out. is this the one with the map sencor or an air flow meter?

i was also wondering what performance mods are common. the motor is already built with forged pistons, arp bolts everywhere, and the head on there now is ported and pollished.

i was planning on upping the boost to around 10-12lb, will probably re fabricate the pipes from the blower right through to the throttle bodie, and run a bigger top mount cooler. theres no room at the front. how big should the cooler be roughly?

i was going to get the injectors i have, which are supposed to be bombed up, checked out, and if there any good run them with a basic after market ecu. what computer would you reccomend?

i was looking at cams, there seem to be a few aftermarket ones avail, what is good? im not wanting a pig of a car, just something nice to drive wiht a fair few suds.

i have heard that the blower dosent kick in till a certain rev is reached, is this true and why?? woudl it matter if i bypassed it?

also, where do the coil packs usualy mount, on the motor somewhere or off on the firewall???

what kind of fuel pumps do you guys run?
what diffs are usualy behind these motors?
what type of clutches do you usualy use?

i think thats about all the dumb questions i have atm, like i say im not to good with these motors yet.

    cheers for any help.

    wow, lots of questions.

only one i can answer right now is the hole at the back of the head is not the thermostat housing, thermostat you need is a remote mounted one, goes on the bottom radiator hose.

do lots of searching, visit toymods.org.au (old toymods) and search there too.

    hi mate.

the 2 bolt housing on the end of the head is a outlet that goes to the thermastat housing, it also holds a coolant temp sensor that reads to the ECU. it is on all the 4ag 16valve variants.
the thermastat housing usualy bolts onto the top of the gearbox, it can be used as a remote unit.
indeed the larger metal pipe from the back of the water pump draws from the thermastat housing, you could cut n shut it as you like. you wont need to change the pump. this also has a small outlet that runs to the throttle body for cold start idle up.
the oultet on the front/side of the head is the outlet that goes to a (well on a aw11 mr2) the pipe that holds the radiator cap and then to the radiator. it also holds the sensor for the temp guage. and has a metal pipe that runs from it along the engine to a heater pipe, it also has a small outlet to the throttle body.

motor is a smallport map sensored gze.

i did a search on these forums and didnt really get that much that interested me. i mostly want to know whats infolved to change the motor from fwd over to rwd. so whats the go with the hole in the back of the head? can i put a blanking plate over it and run the water from somewhere else or am i stuck with it?

feral4mr2, thats a handy bit of info. i think i got a rough idea waht your talking about. im used to working on older cars, current project is a 73 lj torana, so even the idea of not filling the radiator at the damb radiator is a bit weird to me lol.

    I searched. I got this-

A guide on converting a 4ag from FWD to RWD.

Wasn't hard to find at all. Use search.

so whats the go with the hole in the back of the head? can i put a blanking plate over it and run the water from somewhere else or am i stuck with it?
it's for a heater pipe plus holding the sensor i mentioned above. i spose if your tricky you could make some sort of flush mounted one, eg. like a oil filter relocatoin kit.

i was planning on upping the boost to around 10-12lb,
for this you'll need to run a ~165mm oversized crank pulley.

i have heard that the blower dosent kick in till a certain rev is reached, is this true and why?? woudl it matter if i bypassed it?
the s/c is engaged when the ECU reads 8" of vacum.

also, where do the coil packs usualy mount, on the motor somewhere or off on the firewall???
mount to the rear of the head on a smallport i beleive.

what type of clutches do you usualy use?
Exedy do good clutch kits for them. depending on what gearbox you use i spose. eg. size of bellhousing.

oh excelent. i dont really need a heater as such so perhaps i'll be able to just run the sencors there, or put them somewhere else even.

the deal with the blower sounds fair enough, think i'll keep that function

that tutorial should be fairly handy to, just hope its the same to convert an atmo as it is a blown motor. i've already nutted a fair bit of it out, just those few bits were holding me.

cheers so far people, dont be afraid to keep the great info coming
