Default Difference between old and new 22re?

I am under the understanding that there are a number of differences between the older (84<) and newer (84>) 22re's. I am asking this becasue I am considering just buying a new head rather than fucking around cleaning etc.

Now I have been told that the differences are the exhaust ports (round and pear shaped) I have the pear shaped ones and my car is an 09/84 car. 22re.com has a different listing for the 8/84 and 9/84 parts. However places like engnbldr are saying that the differences occured between 84 and 85.

Now this puts me in quite a predicament as I don't know what year head to be looking for and what parts to use in my engine. The engnbldr site also says that 84 should have domed pistons....I have a picture of my block and from what I can see they are not domed but I am not sure what domed Pistons look like

So...can anyone shed some light on the situation?

All good now. For future reference if anyone needs it...pear exhaust ports and flat top pistons means later model block/head. Earlier model has domed pistions and round exhaust ports.

So when ordering parts you get them for the 85-95 or 9/84-95 engine if its the later model.
