that mechanism felt very smooth, albeit with a fairly strong spring to pull it closed..
some types have many ball bearings to allow movement, and then have seals at the openings...

i imagine it is a bitch to have both free movement, reliable throttle closing, and good sealing (ie, better with an alpha-N type arrangement and a 3000rpm idle )

there seem to be a lot of the keihin? flat slide carby setups for spoontahs here.. going for 1-2K or so...

    Hi,

What about using multiple iris's like the ones that open and close on a camera lens?

They open and close via a circular motion, which means you need to hook them on a link so they all open/close together, with a return spring to bring them back to the closed postion.

Mind you, like the slide throttle, I can't see all that effort providing much difference.

for all but crazy exotica the following should generally hold

    few moving parts
    low friction
    low contamination
    low maintenance
    low failure rate
    easy of construction
    cost

And that is why the simple butterfly reigns supreme.

Thanks for all the input everybody. While it makes for an interesting design challenge, the slide throttle has been binned for the moment, as too has the roller-type throttle.

I think I'll concentrate on my low cost 20v ITB adaptor over the summer break.

i think youll never make this system legal on a road car. you would get raped by insurance if you crash

youll have to do all the failure analysis and then find a willing engineer to approve it.

you might have more luck replicating the motorbike type throttle. since you dont need a needle like a motorbike, at WOT, the ovaled tube could be designed nearly flush
