Default Std 1g-gte auto, A340? or something?

I'm thinking of going auto on my 1g and had mused the idea of getting a std 1g-gte auto rebuilt to go behind it.

Are they good for such a thing? What is the std 1g auto, an a340?

yeah thats the one!....GU11TY did 3 of them behind his 1g soarer....too many 'D' dumps....

he then had a box built by MV automatics,,,cost him $3800...? or near for a full strengthen and came with a B n M shifter....2800 stally...

he still has driven the box yet tho....

The A340E is the normal auto found behind most 1G's

they have a mechanical link from throttle to gearbox so any digital smarts dont have to control line pressure.

$3800 seems a touch high, but hey... I guess these things cost money.

    Anyone got an a340e?

What's this about digital smarts? you've lost me. I don't really know how autos work anyway so you may have to dumb it down a bit.

In other words, is an a340e good to rebuild for such an application?

you should talk to Chris Davey about how he modified the auto behind his mighty 1J.

    You can:
-get a shift kit for the valve body
-get MV automatics to rebuild it for you
-do some basic mods to shim up the accumulator(s) for firmer shifts
-use some electronics to control gear changes (there are 3 solenoids in the trans to control 1-2-3-4 selection and torque convertor lockup)
    -get a different torque convertor.

or just give a stock one a service, hook it up to the stock ECT computer and go driving (well not that simple but that's an 19 word precis).

If you can get hold of an intact 1ggte auto loom complete with ECT ECU then you can do the above with relatively minor trauma.

the later models have electronic control of line pressure (e.g. no 'kickdown' cable) - whether that's a better orworse thing i dont know. From my perspective, it would be one more item to work out how to drive electronicly.

    cheers,
    Charles.

I don't have an ecu at all, so I don't really want something to be electronic
and If I do put one it, it'll be rebuilt with a big torque converter and all of that.

so I'd imagine they could get around all that electronics business fairly easily.

We had a 1G auto sent to get checked out by a big name auto place. We came to the conclusion that it wasn't really going to be up to the task behind something that makes the power of your car.

I had an auto that was of good health behind a 1GGZE with a pulley upgrade. This gearbox lasted 3 weeks at the most, with the torque killing it quickly.

You could spend the money that it would cost to build a A340 to handle the power for a little while, or spend the same money on adapting a box that has been proven many times to be a good thing. This being a 3 spd Jatco box.

This is the box that is in 6boost's 9 second panel van, and also the same box I am in the process of doing myself. There is also option of transbrake fro drag racing. Not sure if the have transbrake valve bodies for the A340.

One other thing with the jatco is the fact there is no electrics involved to run the box (except neutral safety switch and reverse of course).

Doesnt 1jz.747 use an a340 in his cressida and pull some good consistent times? I know he has a 1j but i think all a340's are similar? They use the same size converter anyway! You could use your money on soemthing else but pumping $3000 or so to beef up a gearbox that toyota designed to bolt to a 1ggte I think would be an easier option. Does $3800 include gearbox rebuild or freshen up?

They're all similar, but not all the same. The 1G one I wouldn't use, but the 7M and JZ versions of them would be fine. They can be built up fine now, both 1JZ747 and MS-75 use them, and both of them put out bullshit torque.

So, we have mixed debate here.

I think the question for me now is,

    3speed Jatco, OR 4 speed a340e.

    A) How hard is it to adapt a 3speed jatco to a 1g

    AND

    B) Where can one find someone who is willing to build up a a340e properly and why do I need a 7m or jz a340e as opposed to a 1g version IF i'm going to rebuild it?

MV Autos seems to be the name I keep hearing. It's only going to get more popular once people become less afraid to touch the newer boxes.
The second part of the question is better answered by 1JZ-747 or MS-75. Failing that, you could always call MV, they're bound to know the answer.

I just called MV.. DAMN he's a helpful guy. Not like half the arseholes in the automotive industry.

Got the guts of it all down, it appears that he's done plenty of A340e's and that there's a number of different levels of rebuild you can go for.

Looks like there won't be much change out of $3500 though..

For a drag car, and in your position with no loom there. I would probably be opting towards the jatco option. Although I don't know exactly what needs changing to fit one. I just don't really like the electronics as I have had some issues sorting mine out with the MV shift box.

Mike is very helpful. I have got some questions answered a couple of times.

So you had problems with his shift Box? That was part of what I was concerned about.

It just wasn't as easy to wire up as you may think. I think the issue was that I had a gear indicator on the dash whereas most others don't. I had to add 2 additional relays to make sure that ALL power was cut to the shift box so it would go into 4th(OD). The solenoids seem to hold power in them otherwise.

BTW I did a thread on how to install one if you search
