Default battery sizes? is 440CCA too big?

    hi guys,

i bought a battery from the wreckers and its 440 cca, went to hook her up, i touched the terminal and she sparked a bit and then started smoking and teh wires got really hot ! i threw (even the 4ga going to the amps!)the old battery (305CCA) back in (just for a little bit of current while working on the electrics) got most of it working.

then i got an elcheapo charger attempted to charge the old battery and it acutally lost voltage (has 7 volts) and now NOTHING works, have i broken stuff? and can i use the 440 cca battery? and is 7 volts too little for stuff to work?

    oh its in my ta22

secondly, the fact that she made your wires get hot is about your car - not the battery. short cicuit somewhere. as for 7v - did you check it before installing? was it charged?

inspect the battery guts - are the plates collapsed, is the water topped up? specific gravity?

not that it matters anyway - buy a new battery, and sort out the short circuit in the car

i think mine is 520cca in my ke70 luke
yep, from the wreckers. been in there nigh on 2 years now. nothing wrong with $20 wrecker batteries
i think i know what you did...check the battery for the whole positive and negative terminals.
some of them are a bit inbred and are what would appear the wrong way round. i did the same thing in my parts car back when it used to go.

    my JZMA70 has a 780CCA battery.

doesnt make any difference to how the car should perform, just makes it crank longer.

you've hooked it up the wrong way around dude, and by the sounds of it, melted some of the insulation on the loom.

    reverse polarity FTL!

ok well i swaped to my other dash loom now everything is fine ecept the tacho and the wipers. the wipers i cannot work out why they arent workin..... ive run new wires directly to the wiper motor from the switch still doesnt work, i have even hooked em up direct to the power that works but bypasses the switch.

    this is fucked

CCA stands for cold cranking amps. It is the amount of current the voltage can supply at 0 degrees farenheight. So the higher the better. A battery is a voltage source, meaning it places its voltage across the circuit (12V) and the circuit draws from the battery the current. The current drawn depends on the circuit and not the battery. So yeh... drawing too much current is because of something wrong in the circuit, not the battery.

electrical smoke is only a factory feature of english-made vehicles ... with vehicles manufactured outside of the United Kingdom, smoke or melted insultation is considered a fault in urgent need of attention... it is unrelated to the output rating of the battery.
