I've done some searching, but I can't really find what I was looking for (maybe it was on the old forums?) and perhaps it would be good to have this info in one thread anyway.
It seems to be generally accepted that the good old 1JZ runs pretty rich in factory tune - mine certainly gives that impression (exhaust smell and fuel consumption wise). I presume Toyota ran them so rich because extra fuel was cheap (at the time) insurance against all the evils of running too lean. I also assume our electronic engine management systems have come a long way in the 10+ years since the 1JZ was developed. The question is, what is the current best solution for our rich 1JZs?
Mine has minimal mods - just twin dumps and exhaust to match. Plus I have a Celicamad boost controller sitting on the shelf that I haven't fitted yet ...
The Jaycar DFA certainly looks like the cheapest solution - what (apart from the flashy display) is the benefit of using something like the Apexi SAFC? What are the drawbacks to such a system? For example, tricking the ECU about boost levels will affect timing, but is that really an issue with lightly modded engines?
I know a few of you guys are using these units - perhaps you would like to share your wisdom![]()

Actually, the DFA has way more tuning resolution than an SAFC...just doesn't have a pretty screen![]()

so better, without wank.
im sold

Are the DFA's still avaliable at Jaycar, i cant find them?

That, or you can buy my pre-built one, i've got a hand controller too. I just kinda decided to get an aftermarket ECU and be done with it.

I think I might try out the Jaycar then - as EldarO said, it's not a huge investment
They seem to be available - I found them right here. You also need a controller to programme them.
I am assuming that it would be best to have it calibrated on a dyno, or can it be done driving with a wideband O2 sensor hooked to a meter? Has anyone here tried it that way?
Or who would be recommended to dyno it (in the Sydney to Brisbane range ... I live halfway between)
Nothing bad on the timing issue?

you'd need one person driving, and the other tuning, probably better this way, as you get a wider variety of conditions, allows for a more general tune.Originally Posted by BabyZ
however, profesionals are professionals, dyno time costs money for a reason!

what about the problem of tricking the ecu into thinking its under less load than it is and thereby retarding timing as well as adjusting fuel mixtures?
i was thinking of using one of these i already have the jay car boost controller on my 3s-gte but have read bad things about how the timing is affected by altering the signal to the AFM. maybe the 1jz is different in this regard in which case please shoot me down in flames
cheers,
1J uses MAP, not AFM, but ive seen it work on the karmann vortex, hotwire type AFM's, as well as MAP sensored engines.
so it must do some good.

On the contrary the ECU actually advances the timing when you trick it into thinking there is less load. Thats where the real power comes from. The power from adjusting the AFR's is minimal.Originally Posted by hunty

OK, some useful replies so far, thanks.
But to just throw another spanner in the works, what about the SmartPower SMT6 - it also allows for the timing to be adjusted (plus a few other features). Any experiences with these?
I'm still tending toward the DFA, but if I can get the SMT6 I'm looking at for cheap (2nd hand but unused), then I might give it a go.
